Solenoid Valves (Travel Activation, Implement Activation,

Swing Brake, & Creeper Speed)
SMCS - 5479-010

Remove & Install Solenoid Valves (Travel Activation,

Implement Activation, Swing Brake, & Creeper Speed)
NOTE: The removal and installation procedures for the travel activation solenoid valve, implement
activation solenoid valve, swing brake solenoid valve and the creeper speed solenoid valve are the
same. In the procedure which follows, the travel activation solenoid valve is used as an example for
removal and installation of all solenoid valves.

Fluid Spillage Containment

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance,
testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools
And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in
Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTE: Put identification on all lines, hoses, wires and tubes for installation purposes. Cap and plug
all connectors, lines, hoses and tubes to prevent the loss of oil and keep foreign material from entering
the system.

At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure.

Hot oil can cause burns. To prevent possible personal injury, release the
pressure in the implement hydraulic circuits (boom, stick, bucket, and
swing), the travel circuits, and the hydraulic oil tank at the breather cap
before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.

Remove the filler plug only when the engine is stopped and the filler
plug is cool enough to touch.

1. Release the pressure in the hydraulic system as follows:

a. Fully retract the stick cylinder rod.

b. Adjust the position of the bucket so it will be flat on the ground when the boom is lowered.

c. Lower the boom until the bucket is flat on the ground.

d. Stop the engine.

e. Place the engine start switch in the "ON" position without starting the engine.

f. Move the control levers for the boom, stick, bucket and swing to all full stroke positions. This will
release any pressure that might be present in the pilot system.

g. Slowly move the travel pilot control pedal to "FORWARD" and "REVERSE" travel positions. This
will release any pressure in the travel circuit.

h. Slowly loosen and remove the pressure cap on the hydraulic tank to release the hydraulic pressure.

i. Reinstall and tighten the pressure cap on the hydraulic tank.

j. The pressure in the hydraulic system has been released and implement/travel lines and components
can be removed.

1. Travel Activation Solenoid Valve. 2. Implement Activation Solenoid Valve.

3. Swing Brake Solenoid Valve. 4. Creeper Speed Solenoid Valve.

2. Loosen screw (7), and remove solenoid (6) from coil (5).

3. Remove cover (8).

4. Remove O-ring seal (10) from nut (9).

5. Remove nut (9) from tube group (11).

6. Remove coil (5) from tube group (11).

7. Remove O-ring seal (13) from flange (12).

There is a slight amount of spring force against tube group (11). As tube
group (11) is being removed from flange (12), the spring force will be
released. To prevent possible personal injury, hold the tube assembly by
hand as it is being removed from the flange.

10. Remove four cap screws (19) and flange (12) from the pilot manifold.

11. Remove housing (17), with the three O-ring seals, from the pilot manifold.

NOTE: The following procedure is for the installation of the solenoid valves.

12. Check the condition of all parts of the solenoid valve prior to installation. If any of the parts are
damaged, use new parts for replacement.

13. Install the three O-ring seals and housing (17) in the pilot manifold.

14. Install flange (12) on the pilot manifold using four cap screws (19).
