PT™ Fuel Pump Gasket Care
Core Issue
It has come to the attention of Cummins Inc. that some of the gaskets originally supplied in PT™
Fuel Pumps sourced from China and used in CCEC produced engines (L10, LTA10, M11,
NT/NTA 855, KT/KTA/KTTA19, K/KT/KTA 38, KTA50), prior to July 31, 2011, contain some
percentage of asbestos. The plant of origin and the manufacturing date of the engine can be
obtained from the Engine Serial Number data plate. Fuel pump serial numbers after 337484 are
not subject to this notice. Cummins Inc, believes that the encapsulated chrysotile asbestos
material present in these gaskets does not release asbestos fibers that can be inhaled, and
therefore does not present a safety risk unless it is handled in such a manner as to abrade, or
disturb the integrity of the gasket surface, which could occur during some servicing. We do not
believe that normal servicing of the PT™ Fuel Pumps sourced from China will cause this to occur.
Cummins Inc, has conducted tests which have confirmed our belief that these gaskets can be
safely handled and removed. The normal operation of these units does not require you to take any
addition precautions.
A sample of a typical PT™ fuel pump data tag, from a China sourced PT™ fuel pump, is included
below for reference. The fuel pump serial number is the six digit number in the top right corner of
the data tag. The fuel pump with this data tag was manufactured after the changeover to non-
asbestos material.
