Subject: RE: JARHEAD

Dear Sam,

I read the script quickly over the weekend to get an overall sense of it, since I hadn't read the
book and had heard virtually nothing about it before. Though I didn't make detailed notes or
written assessments, i did form the preliminary opinion that it‘s very unlikely that we will reach
an accommodation on the script. Why not? Because I don‘t think it's possible to resolve what
are almost certainly going to be many serious DoD/USMC concerns without departing too far
from the present screenplay. l arrived at this opinion independently, but Captain Rushing
concurs entirely.

i know that this is a bleak assessment, and coming during your vacation is particularly
unwelcome. But i don‘t want to raise unrealistic eXpectations by suggesting that we
undertake negotiations to attempt to resolve specific concerns, when l strongly believe
that such efforts - no matter how earnest and diligent — would almost certainly prove to be
unsuccessful. -

Best,

Phil

Dear Phil—

Happy 4th July !

Sorry for the phone tag. I am off on vacation from the 5th to 19th ofJuly.
I have been busy with VANHELSING and THE VILLAGE for the past two years so it is time to clear
the head before JARHEAD swings into full swing-

JARHEAD is a Universal film from producers Doug Wick a Lucy Fisher. Sam Mendes , Academy
Award Winning Director {American Beauty) is on board to direct- William Broyles Jr. (Appollo 13) is
the screen writer. i will Executive Produce.

The film is an adaptation of the book JARHEAD by STA Marine Anthony (Tony) Swofford. The film
chronicles one marine's storey about the core: his fellow marines, his family and his participation in
the Gulf War. The storey is told from the first person as Swoffotd‘s voice literally resonates off the
page and onto the screen. This is a marine's storey, a jarhead's , with a view from within the
“trenches".

Universal and the producers are seeking DOD's cooperation and assistance with the production of
the film. We are in the early pre-production stage—casting, location scouting: scheduling & budgeting
and polishing the screenplay. We anticipae a mid to late November start of photography.
The film is also slated for an October 2005 release.

We have been focusing our scouting on California, Arizona New Mexico at Texas.
The took of the deserts of New Mexico (White Sands) and Texas (El Paso) are of particula n'nterest
an appear to be a good match for the Saudi—Kuwait deserts. The White Sands Missile Base: Ft Bliss
and Camp Pendleton are a few of the locations of interest.

.Jirn Dever, retired STA Marine is on board as our technical advisor. On our behalf he has given a
copy of the script to Captain Rushing at the Wilshire USMC PAC). Additional copies of the script
have been sent to all the Armed Forces PAO‘s at Captain Rushing's request.

There is obviously much more to discuss but this will give you some background on our film.

Please send me an email after you have read the script- Jim Brubaker, Head of Production at
Universal will be following up as well.

I look forward to seeing you again and to your thoughts on the screenplay.

I am a reporter with THE WORLD public radio program. We're a nationally syndicated
co-production of the BBC, Public Radio International, and WGBH in Boston (where l'rn
based}

I'm doing a piece for our show about the up—coming film, JARHEAD, based on the
book by Anthony Swoftord. The film is due to be released on November 4, 2005.

I'd like to cover the movie from the perspective of current Marines.

To do that, I'm wondering if it would be possible to visit Camp Lejeune and take a few
Marines to the film-

I would record some of their reactions during the movie, and then speak with them
afterward about what they thought about it. I‘d be interested in their take on how
realistic the film is in relation to their own experiences with the Corps-

i realize this is a bit of an unusual request. And that it might be a tricky one to
coordinate. But I wanted to give it a try.

Seeing as the film is coming out close to the Corps' Nov. 10 birthday, it would make a
good peg to mark the date.

I'm also looking at a doing a related story. It has to do with recruiting.

At a time when the Army is having trouble recruiting, I‘m interested in talking to folks
about why the Marines continue to do so well attracting people. if possible, I'd like to
take advantage of my visit by Speaking with some Marines about what it was that
appealed to them about the Marine Corps.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Katy Clark

Send in Marines? '
By ROBERT DOMINGUEZ
‘ DAILY NEWS FEATURE WRITER
Wednesday, November 2nd, 2005

While "Jarhead" depicts US. Marines showing bravery in battle during the first Gulf War, it hardly earned a
hearty hoo-waa! from the Corps. '

The USMC refused to assist the producers with the making of the upcoming film, which is based on former
Marine sniper Anthony‘Swofford's controversial memoir of his 1991 tour of duty in Desert Storm.

"In most cases, we do cooperate," says Lt. Tryiokasus Brown, deputy director of the US. Marine Corps Motion
Picture and Television Liaison Office in Los Angeles. -

"But we have particular instructions from the Department of Defense that we follow, and the original script [for
"Jarheads"] did not meet D.O.D. requirements," adds Brown. "It did not show a feasible interpretation of military
life or operations or policies, and those are the guidelines we follow."

Though Brown could not be specific about the reasons for the USMC's reluctance to aid the production, it's not
hard to see why.

Published two years ago, Swofford's "Jarhead: A Marine's Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles" was both
lauded and lambasted for its brutally honest look at life in the modern military.

The movie, which Opens Friday, likewise contains scenes of young Marines engaging in certain activities —
ranging from silly to sexual to psychotic — that would make John Wayne wince with embarrassment.

"Those are [Swofford's] personal memoirs, and we understand it's totally entertainment," says Brown. "It's not
meant to be a documentary."

Yet one Marine who has read the book and seen the film has no problems with the screen adaptation.

. "I found a few things in the book to be maybe a little inaccurate, maybe embellished," says the corpsman, who
wished to remain anonymous. "However, some of the relationships in the movie seemed to be true to life."

Mendes: "Americans Don't Get 'Jarhead'"

_ 4 Jan 2006
“W” Oscar—winning film director Sam Mendes claims American viewers don't
understand his new movie Jarhead as well as Europeans - because they
expect war films to be one-sided. The movie based on the novel Jarhead:
A Marine’s Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles by Anthony
Swofford, and focuses on the frivolousness of war, rather than the glory —
something Mendes feels Americans don't grasp. Mendes says, "I feel they've
understood in Europe._In America, it‘s like talking about a different movie.
"Fundamentally, Jarhead disobeys all the laws of American movies, and not just
the political laws of American movies right now which demand on some level to tell
us which side they're on. "In Europe, there's a sense this film comes from the
tradition of absurdist war movies about the futility of conflict. "It has more in
common with Beckett, Sartre and Banuel than it does with Oliver Stone. "In
America, they assumed I was trying to make an Oliver Stone movie and that I'd
failed."
