LESSON 5 – Working with Files folders and Applications

ACTIVITY 5-3
Managing Files and Folders

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Your instructor will provide you with some data files.

SCENARIO
You are helping a new project manager start a project by basing it on the skeleton of an existing
project. After discussing the file structure, you both decide it would be good to keep the
original project files in its own folder and to make it so that those files cannot be accidentally
modified. Right now there are only a few files in the structure, but as the project progresses,
there will be many files. You and the project manager decide to try several different views to
see which one will work best.

1) Rename, copy, and move files to better organize the project.

a) Navigate into the Data folder. This folder is located on Canvas.
b) Drag the File Management folder to C:\. This will copy the files from the removable media
onto your hard drive.

c) Right-click the C:\File Management folder and select Rename. Rename the File Management
folder to My Current Project.
d) Open the My Current Project folder, and then open the Original Project Files folder.

f) Press Ctrl+C to copy the selected items to the Clipboard.

subfolders and files selected, select OK.
e) Click any one of the files in the folder and select Properties.
f) Verify that Read-only is selected, and then select Cancel.
g) Verify that files in the New Project Files folder are not marked as read-only.

3) Change the display options and then apply them to all folders of the same type.
a) With the Original Project Files folder open, select the View tab on the ribbon (or View Menu).
b) Select View→Layout.
c) Point to each of the layout view options to get a preview of how each layout view displays
the contents of the folder.
