Good morning the honorable audience, first of all I would like to deliver my gratitude to you all for

coming, and here I am Jimmy Christofer; Economic and Business Department, Majoring in
Accounting.

This journal will discuss furtherly about learning approaches and impact on academic performance

Journal overview :

“accounting student’s learning approaches and impact on academic performance” This journal was
published in “ Jurnal Akuntansi dan Keuangan Indonesia” December 2009 by Suhaiza Ismail majoring
in Economic and Management Science, and studied at International Islamic University of Malaysia.

Methodology :

The respondent of this study consist of student who are taking Business Finance course in Semester
2 2007/2008 and it was conducted in week 12 of semester 2 with total of 158 Respondent
representing 91.9% total student who were taking the subject during the semester

It is useing questionnaire as it Insturment using the ASSIST ( Approaches and study skills inventory
for student” that was adopted by Entwistle and tait method to gather information and it divided
into 4 parts :

A. Background Information : Gender, Student Identification Number, Country of origin


B. Student Interpretation and understanding of the term learning
C. Measure the respondent’s approaches in studying
D. Inquires about student’s preferences for the different types of course and teaching.

Characterization 3 different learning approaches

a. Surface Approaches = Low level of understanding , memorizing information solely purpose


on complete the task requirement.
b. Deep Approaches = Full understanding, able to relate their prior knowledge and personal
experiences to learnt subject matter.
c. Strategic Approaches : Strategizing & Mixing their learning technique

To analyze the data , statistical test were undertaken using SPSS, to find the mean standard
deviation, minimum, maximum values to report findings on the preferred learning approeaches.
Result:

74% female 26% Male; 5% International student, 95% Local Student

1. The deep and strategic approaches are positively correlated with the examination result
( performs better )
2. Academic performance with strategic approach the highest between 3 kinds of Approaches
3. Surface Approach resulted in lower performance in the examination
4. For Male Student the learning approaches seems to be significant to their academic
performance, and for Female Student it has a slightly lower effect than the counter group.

Suggestion :

1. Lecturers teaching the subject need to encourage the usage of deep approach among
stuendt to ensure have a better academic performance, this can be done via teaching
method used in conducting classes as well as in the question setting for class exercise
