PARENT COMMUNICATION LETTER 2

April 7, 2019

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Smith,

I am very proud of John’s efforts to improve his science grade this quarter. He has done a
wonderful job of increasing his participation in class. However, the scientific method seems to
present a challenge for John. Forming observations seems to be his biggest stumbling block.

We have been completing a variety of activities in class to help students increase their
observation skills. Every student has an interactive composition notebook in which to record
their observations, we use this daily. John has been struggling with this assignment. He
continually leaves his observation sheet blank, and therefore receives zeros on his weekly
notebook grade. Together, John and I have discussed the importance of trying to form
observations during the class time allotted for this activity, working one-on-one, as well as with
peers during group time to help brainstorm observations collaboratively.

Some extra practice at home may help him with his science work and building up his confidence
in this area. For example, when riding in the car together, you can have John look out the
window for a brief period of time, and then have him close his eyes and recite back to you what
he has seen. You can further this conversation by determining whether his observations were
qualitative, such as the colors of the plants he witnessed, or quantitative, such as the number of
cars he saw or the approximate size of the tree. I feel this is something quick, simple, not too
overwhelming for John, and will help reinforce what we are practicing in class. However, if you
feel there is a way to practice this skill that better fits your family’s routine, please go right
ahead.
PARENT COMMUNICATION LETTER 3

Thank you for your continued effort. I know that with our joint support, John will make amazing
strides for a strong finish to the school year. I will check back in with you both in two weeks to
discuss John’s progress.

Have a wonderful weekend with your family. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please
do not hesitate to contact me; my phone number is 480-121-2543.

Warm Regards,
