ES 1 First Exam 1st Sem 2014-2015 Problem 1: Geometric

Construction
Given that XY is a line externally tangent on the left of circles A and B,
1.) Construct circle A (tangent at point Y) with diameter = [(sqrt.5)/8]XY. 2.) Construct
circle B (tangent at point X) with diameter = (8/3)diameter of circle A. 3.) Construct circle
C, which is tangent to line XY and to circles A and B. 4.) Draw line CD equal to four
times the ratio of the area and circumferenceof circle C,
oriented 56.25 degrees from the +x-axis.

ES 1 First Exam 2nd Sem 2013-2014 Problem 1: Geometric
Construction
The figure below is a representation of a Cam & Roller Follower.
• Circle X is the Cam. It rotates about point A.
• Circle Y is the roller. It is always centered at point B.
• Arc BC is the follower arm. It rotates about point C.
• Circle X is always tangent to Circle Y. Construct the new configuration of the
mechanism after the cam has rotated 60 degrees CCW.

Perpendicular Lines/Planes
In the 75th Quarter Quell Hunger Games, Katniss and her friends discovered that the
whole arena is a dome surrounded by interleaved hexagonal barriers. Towards the end
of the games, Katniss fired an arrow (line KS) to a hexagonal barrier (hexagon
ABCDEF). The arrow (line KS) pierced the center of the barrier (hexagon ABCDEF)
perpendicularly causing the whole roof of the arena to collapse.
Construct line KS if it is perpendicular to hexagon ABCDEF. Point K is located in the
center of the hexagon and is a part of the plane that contains the hexagon. The true
length of line KS is shown below.
