This study aimed to determine the employment and productivity of the graduates across four-
year courses at Colegio De San Gabriel Arcangel, School Year 2013-2014 and 2015-2016. The courses
were Education, Psychology, Accountancy, Pharmacy, Criminology, and Midwifery.

It used the descriptive method and interviews to the randomly selected respondents.
Observations were also availed to support the data gathered. A locally developed instrument was
utilized for data gathering.

The findings showed that the respondents vary in their profile as to courses, gender, civil status,
and school year graduated. Majority have commendable employment and work as regular employees.
Their monthly salary ranges from 5,000-10,000. They have not experienced difficulty in getting jobs and
stayed not more than two years. The passing rate in licensure examination increases each year with one
taker ranked TOP 6 in education year 2014 and TOP 7 in midwifery year 2016.

A model framework for policy formulation was developed.

Key Terms: Employment, Productivity, Model Framework, Policy Formulation

FULL PAPER

Earning a college degree is all about opening of opportunities in life. It prepares the individual
both intellectually and socially, for a career and future life. The benefits of a college education include
career opportunities like better paying and higher skilled jobs, but studies have shown that it also leads
to overall happiness and stability. (Williams and Owen, 2011)

This is how valuable a college degree can be. It is seen as an investment that will bring
substantial rewards, not only to the employee, but to the company as well. Data shows that in an
economic recession, college graduates are less vulnerable to layoffs. The people who suffer the most
from job cuts are lower level employees who only have high school diplomas. There are no guarantees,
but if one has a college degree he/she will be less likely to suffer long-term unemployment. It is an
Investment in one’s future. Attending College is a major commitment of time and money, but it is also a
down payment for success. Earning college degree will help a person realize his/her goals and his/her
career as well. It requires a lot of hard work, but work prepares him/her for a challenging and rewarding
career and a more fruitful life.

Hence, this study aimed to determine the status of employment and productivity of the
graduates/alumni in the four-year courses offered at Colegio De San Gabriel Arcangel from School Year
2013-2014 to 2015-2016. The courses included in the study were BEEd, BSEd, AB in Psychology, BS in
Social Work, BS in Accountancy, BS in Pharmacy, BS in Criminology, and Two-year Midwifery course.

Specifically, the study sought to answer the following questions:

1. What is the profile of the graduate-respondents in terms of: (1.1) courses; (1.2) gender; (1.3)
civil status; and (1.4) school year graduated?

2. What is the status of the graduates in terms of: (2.1) nature of job; (2.2) employment
position; (2.3) type of company; (2.4) employment status; (2.5) length of stay; and (2.6)
waiting time for employment?

3. What is the level of the graduates’ productivity in terms of performance in licensure

examination across courses?

4. How do graduates perceive the effects of college training on their productivity in terms of:
(4.1) course content; (4.2) teaching competence of faculty; (4.3) adequacy of library
facilities; and (4.4) adequacy of laboratory facilities?

5. Do the graduates’ productivity in terms of performance in licensure examination differ

across programs?
6. Based on the findings of the study, what model framework could be developed as input for
policy formulation?

The study made use of the descriptive method to determine the status on employment and
productivity of the graduates in Colegio de San Gabriel Arcangel.

Interviews was used to some randomly selected respondents. Observations were also availed to
support the data gathered. A locally developed instrument was utilized in data gathering to capture
information required of the study.

The data were tabulated and computed using the following statistical tools:

1. Frequency (F), percentage (%), and weighted means ( W Xs ) were computed in presenting
the profile of the respondents of the study, employment and productivity of the
respondents using tables and graphs.

2. The F-test (one-way ANOVA) was computed to compare the graduates’ productivity in terms
of monthly income and performance in licensure examinations across programs.

3. The chi-square (X2) goodness of fit was computed to find out the effects of their graduate
training.

The findings revealed the following:

1. Respondents’ profile:

1.1. In terms of courses, 35 percent (%) were in Education course – Bachelor of Elementary
Education and Bachelor of Secondary Education; 13 percent (%) were in Bachelor of

2013-14; out of 52, 77 percent (%) passed in SY 2014-15; and out of 43, 62.79 percent
(%) passed in SY 2015-16. For the BSEd graduates, out of 23 takers, 70 percent (%)
passed the LET in SY 2013-14; out of 25, 52 percent (%) passed in SY 2014-15; and out
of 21, 52.38 percent (%) passed in SY 2015-16.

3.2. For the graduates of AB in Psychology, the only one (1) taker obtained a 100 percent
(%) passing rate in SY 2013-14; out of 8, 41 percent (%) passed in SY 2014-15; and out
of 12, 8.33 percent (%) passed in SY 2015-16.

3.3. Under BS Accountancy, for SY 2013-14 and 2014-15, there were no takers, but in SY
2015-16, out of 2 takers, 100 percent (%) passed the board exam.

passed the board in SY 2015-16.

3.5. Under BS Criminology Education course, 13 takers passed the board in SY 2013-14, 8
takers passed in SY 2014-15, and out of 28 takers, 17.86 percent (%) passed in SY
2015-16.

3.6. Under the two-year midwifery course from SY 2013-14 to SY 2015-16, the results in
the whole performance in the licensure examination are very satisfactory with one
taker ranked TOP 7 nationwide year 2016.

4. The chi-square test ratio (X2) of 46.21 showed a significant effect on the graduates’
performance in licensure examination. The obtained value (X2) of 46.21 is higher than the
critical chi-square value of 9.488 at .05 level of confidence

5. Based on the findings of the study, a Model Framework was developed on employment and
productivity as inputs for policy formulation. (See Appendix A)

Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn:

1. Graduate-respondents vary in their profile in terms of courses, gender, civil status, and
school year graduated.

2. Majority of the graduates have commendable employment status and most of them are
already working as regular, in various institutions as employees. They receive a monthly
salary that ranges from 5,000 to 10,000. Generally they have not experienced the difficulty
in getting their jobs after graduation and most of them stayed in their work for not more
than two years.

3. The percentage of passing rate in Licensure examinations increases each year across
programs, with one taker in BEEd ranked TOP 6 last 2014 and one taker in Midwifery ranked
TOP 7 nationwide. It means that the College trainings have contributed to the graduates in
their job knowledge and easy landing to a job as well.

4. The level of productivity differs across course programs in BEEd, BSEd, AB in Psychology, BS
in Accountancy, BS in Pharmacy, BS in Criminology, and Two-year Midwifery course.

5. A model framework was developed as input for policy formulation.

Based on the findings and conclusions to the study, the following recommendations are hereby
submitted:

1. Since this study covers only graduates from SY 2013-20114 to 2015-2016, there should be
regular conduct of tracer study to keep tract on the employability and productivity status of
the graduates.

2. The program of studies or syllabi of the different courses/programs can also be the next
topic for review/study of the future researchers.

3. It is recommended that the tracer study be replicated in some future time to cover
backward assessment that is, securing information from the employers regarding the
productivity of CDSGA graduates as their employees.
