To Whom it May Concern,

I am writing to express my interest in the Band Director position opening in your county. I have been
well informed of the exceptional quality of the Fine Arts departments in the county and look forward to
the potential opportunity to be a member of this community.

As seen in my resume, I will be graduating from James Madison University (JMU) with a degree in Music
Education in May of this year. While I may be new to the field, I have gained significant experience in
both observational and hands on settings. I have been on staff with the marching bands at Harrisonburg
High School and Broadway High School, teaching music and marching to students of varying ages and
ability levels. As the student conductor for the New Horizons Band in Harrisonburg, VA, I have been
given the opportunity to engage with musicians that require different accommodations for success. I have
also served as a teaching assistant for several collegiate courses including “Music Education: Professional
Practice” and “Instrumental Methods for Vocal MUED Majors.” Through my involvement with the
Marching Royal Dukes, I have gained substantial teaching and leadership experiences as a Drum Major,
Music Section Leader, and Visual Section Leader. These opportunities and many others have allowed me
to grow as an educator, leader, and musician.

During my undergraduate career I became involved outside of the JMU and Harrisonburg communities
as well. I was able to participate in research and present at several conferences including the IMPACT
Conference held at New York University in 2017 and the Virginia Music Educators Association
Conference in 2018.

In closing, I would like to thank you for taking the time to review my application and accompanying
materials. I hope to have the opportunity to work with students, faculty, and staff to continue a tradition
of excellence in music. I look forward to contributing my ideas and enthusiasm for music education and
hope we will have an opportunity to discuss my qualifications in the near future.

Sincerely,

Fernanda Azevedo
