UNIT/CHAPTER OBJECTIVE/GENERALIZATION/BIG IDEA:


● The Earths Four Layers is a lesson covering the four layers of planet earth. Understanding the earths
layers, thickness, composition, and physical state corresponds with TN State Standard 3.0.

LESSON OBJECTIVE:
● Students will comprehend the four layers of the earth and its makeup after watching a video, playing web 2.0
game, and completing a quiz.
● The goal of this lesson is for students to demonstrate a clear understanding of the earth’s layers and each
layer’s makeup. Students will watch videos, view websites, create a Prezi to display their knowledge,
and take a quiz over their understanding of the material.

STANDARDS ADDRESSED:

 TN Science- 4.ESS2: Analyze and interpret data on the four layers of the Earth, including thickness, composition,
and physical states of these layers.
 ISTE Standard 3. : b. Locate, organize, analyze, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of
sources and media.

Students will View video in the first link, take a short quiz in the second link, read more about the layers
of the earth in the third link, and then combine all their learned information onto a Prezi presentation. A

● BACKGROUND and RATIONALE:
● Students will gain and understanding of the Earths layers and facts about them
● Academic language that will be used in this lesson are: Crust, mantle, Outer Core, Inner Core
● This lesson will connect with what if being taught in the fourth grade about technology
● To build on this lesson, there will be future lessons that go more in depth of the geological elements that
make up each layer of the Earth.
● I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not master the objectives and for
those ready for enrichment. However, modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of
this particular lesson.

PROCEDURES AND TIMELINE:


● Introduction: To introduce this lesson, I will show students on a projected screen, a picture of the earth
where the layers are visible. I will explain to them that we are going to be learning and understanding
more about these layers.
● Procedures: Provide a sequential (step by step) description of the procedures and activities for the
lesson.
Teacher procedure:
1. Direct students to open a search engine on their computer
2. Direct students to the link to the video
3. Ask students questions about the video
4. Direct students to the link to the quiz on the layers of the earth
5. Go to website that explains the layers of the earth
6. Direct students to create a Prezi over what they have learned
Student Procedure: 50 minutes
1. Open search engine
2. Go to video link and watch (5 minutes)
3. Answer questions prompted from teacher (5 minutes)
4.Go to link that opens quiz on layers of the earth. (5minutes
5. Go to website and read about layers of the earth (10 minutes)
6. Go to Prezi and create a presentation over what the learner has read. (25 minutes)
● Closure: To close the lesson I will ask for volunteers to share their Prezi presentations with the class. I
will then wrap up the lesson by doing a recap on the layers of the earth
