First Quarter – Force, Motion & Energy

LESSON PLAN on Newton’s 1st & 2nd Law of Motion
Prepared by: Clarice Ramos Gonzaga

I. OBJECTIVES
Content The learners demonstrate an understanding of:
Standards  Newton’s three laws of motion and uniform circular motion.
Performance The learners shall be able to:
Standards  Develop a written plan and implement a “Newton’s Olympics”
After the teaching-learning process, at least 80% of the learners should be
able to:
 Investigate the relationship between the amount of force applied
Specific
and the mass of the object to the amount of change in the objects
Learning
motion; (S8FE-Ia-15)
Objectives /
 Infer that when a body exerts a force on another, an equal amount
Learning
of force is exerted back on it; (S8FE-Ia-16)
Competencies
 Demonstrate how a bosy responds to changes in motion.
(S8FE-Ib-17)

II. SUBJECT MATTER

A. Content
Newton’s 1st & 2nd Law of Motion

B. Concepts
Concepts Description of the Concept
Newton’s Law of Inertia states that “An object remains in the state of
rest or motion until an unbalanced force acts on it.”

1st Law of
Motion (Law of
Inertia)

Inertia is the resistance of any physical object to any change in its state
of motion.

Relationship between Mass and Inertia:

The greater the mass of an object, the greater its inertia. The greater
the inertia, the harder it is to change the state of motion of the object .
Inertia
Example: pingpong ball and Bowling ball

Newton’s Law of Acceleration states that “the acceleration of an object

2ndLaw of is directly proportional to the net force applied, and inversely
Motion (Law of proportional to the object’s mass.”
Acceleration)
The
sec
ond law of motion shows the relationship between acceleration, force,
and mass.

Law of Acceleration can be written as :

wherein the SI unit for force is Newton/N. One newton is the net
external force required to accelerate a 1kg mass by 1m/s2.

1 N = 1kg . m/s2

III. LEARNING PROCEDURE

A. Routine
 Prayer
 Greetings
 Checking of Attendance

B. Lesson Proper
a. ENGAGE
i. The teacher will give an activity “Picture says a thousand words” (Picture
Analysis) this activity will serve as a warm-up activity intended to spark
interest and as a tie-in to the day’s lesson. After the initial presentation of the
image, the teacher will ask the students to comment on what they see and
observe. then the teacher will use guiding questions to encourage them to
summarize what the image is showing and to relate it in today’s discussion.

b. EXPLORE
i. Each group is task to play “Newton’s Bottle”. In this activity, each group will
pull out a 20 peso bill without ruining the stacked coins on the top of the bill
that is directly over the mouth of the bottle. The group with the least time to
do this activity will be the winner.

c. EXPLAIN
i. The teacher will discuss the concept of Newton’s 1st and 2nd Law of Motion.
While doing so, she will give problems that must be answered through the
answer boards.

d. ELABORATE
i. The teacher will conduct a Quiz Bee which will consist of five (3) questions.
The group with the most number of correct answers will be considered as
the winner.
1. A football is kicked with a force of 3.5 N and accelerates at 7.0 m/s2 to
the right, What is the mass of the ball?
2. Determine the mass of a car if it accelerates at 2.3 m/s2 after a 580 N
force is applied to it.
3. A cargo from a ship needs a force of 720 N to increase its speed from
rest to 2.5 m/s within 4 seconds. How heavy is the cargo?

e. EVALUATE
Direction: Answer the following questions below. (with COMPLETE SOLUTION
GRESA)

1. A 3 kg object accelerated at 5 m/s2. Estimate the force needed to

accelerate the object.
2. A 12 kg balikbayan box is lifted by a force of 120 N. Calculate the
acceleration of the box.
3. A force accelerates a 120 kg car by 3.6m/s2. How much acceleration
will the same force produce in a 240 kg car?
4. How much force is required to accelerate a 2,000 kg car at 2 m/s2?
5. A 0.104 kg model rocket accelerates at 45.9 m/s2 on takeoff. What is
the force experienced by the rocket?
