Dear Bookseller,

All publishers try to create books that are unique in some way and this Fall we have a particularly strong list in that it has a number of books which are “firsts” in one way or another. I am very proud to be publishing Philip Guston by Robert Storr. Written by one of the world’s leading art critics, it is the first major book to cover the entire career of an artist whose work is seen as increasingly important, as is indicated by the major retrospective exhibition that will start at the National Gallery of Art in Washington in 2020, before traveling to a number of other major museums. Louise Bourgeois was a notably private person, but towards the end of her life, for the first and only time, she allowed a photographer to capture her working in her studio and relaxing at home. Jean-François Jaussaud’s work is reproduced in Louise Bourgeois: An Intimate Portrait, a singular book, which will be warmly welcomed by her many fans. From Above: The Story of Aerial Photography is, surprisingly, the first book to track this subject - from the extraordinary photographs of Paris taken from a balloon by Nadar to the pictures taken from satellites and drones today. Drag by Simon Doonan is unique in that it is the first to tell the complete story of drag through its different “tribes” in a text that is as funny as it is informative. But there are also books that follow up on the success of earlier ones, particularly in the children’s list. My Fairy Library is a development from the acclaimed My Miniature Library, enabling children to create magical miniature books that they can place in a beautiful fairy setting. Jason Ford’s Monster Book of Zombies, Spooks, and Ghouls is an activity book that should unleash children’s creativity in the same way as his bestselling The Super Book for Superheroes; and Mike Barfield’s Ultimate Excuse Generator provides children with, literally, millions of hilarious reasons for not doing their homework or tidying their room, a follow on from the popular Ultimate Wisecrack Generator. Our gift list is as inventive as ever. We are launching our first full board game, Going, Going, Gone: An Art Auction Game in which the players have to compete to create the most valuable collection of recently discovered masterpieces by the great artists. Dream Decoder, wonderfully illustrated by Harriet Lee-Merrion, is the perfect gift for those who want to uncover the secrets of their unconscious; Art Out of the Box provides exciting challenges to aspiring young artists. Musical Experiments for after Dinner provides highly original ways of making an evening go with a swing. But perhaps as beautiful as any is The World of Shakespeare, a wonderful jigsaw puzzle with specially commissioned art work by Adam Simpson, in which Elizabethan London is recreated and populated with scenes and characters from Shakespeare’s plays. I hope you enjoy selling these books and games as much as we did creating them.

and characters from Shakespeare’s plays. I hope you enjoy selling these books and games as much

Philip Guston

Robert Storr

The only up-to-date retrospective of the great American artist Philip Guston

Written by the preeminent art critic, painter, and academic Robert Storr

Over 300 illustrations, some published here for the first time

An authoritative and comprehensive retrospective of the work of the visionary, adventurous, and influential painter Philip Guston. Driven and consumed by art, Guston painted and drew compulsively and talked about it with an unrivalled passion and fluency. Preeminent art critic, curator, and artist Robert Storr maps Guston’s career, from the early social realist murals, to his poetic easel paintings of the 1940s, his shimmering abstract expressionist works of the 1950s and early 1960s, and his new and powerful language of figurative painting of the later 1960s and 70s. Also included will be key writings by Guston himself as well as an in-depth and illustrated chronology. Featuring all the artist’s best-known works, as well as many lesser- known and previously unpublished paintings, the book will also include photographs of the artist at home, at work, at exhibitions, and with other artists.

Jaussaud’s images offer a rare glimpse into the private world of one of the greatest artists of the 20 th century

With extracts from Bourgeois’ diary and her personal notes, as well as short texts from Jaussaud, Marie-Laure Bernadac, and Xavier Girard

Jean-François Jaussaud met Louise Bourgeois for the first time in 1994, at her studio in Brooklyn. But it was not before she had interrogated him about every aspect of his life that he earned her trust.

A first photo session was set up in spring 1995, under one condition: she would destroy the photographs

if she didn’t like them

passed the test. He was then given carte blanche to photograph her studio and her house in Chelsea, and he kept coming back for another 11 years. Jaussaud’s photographs of Louise Bourgeois in her house and studio are a moving testimony showing how completely implicated in her work she was, to the point that her private life and her work were inextricably interwoven.

Jaussaud agreed to it and

work were inextricably interwoven. Jaussaud agreed to it and AUTHOR Jean-Francois Jaussaud is a French photographer,

Written by one of the world’s leading authorities on design

Arrows, swashes, swooshes, globes, sunbursts, and parallel, vertical, and horizontal lines, words, letters, shapes, and pictures. Logos are the most ubiquitous and essential of all graphic design devices, representing ideas, beliefs, and, of course, things. They primarily identify products, businesses, and institutions, but they are also associated, hopefully in a positive way, with the ethos or philosophy of those entities. The 50 logos in this book are examples of good ideas in the service of representation, reputation, and identification.

Attractive book-like box reflects the storytelling theme and underlines the literary appeal

Fire your imagination with these fun storytelling cards. Reviving the Victorian craze for “myrioramas,” the 20 picture cards can be placed in any order to create seamless scenes. Almost infinite combinations provide endless storyscaping possibilities. Enter a strange land of winged horses and vengeful gods, where one-eyed monsters feast on human

flesh. Perhaps you will stumble across buried treasure or receive a favorable prophecy, but watch out for the sinister boatman. He is waiting to transport you across the river, a journey from which no one has ever

Where will the story take you?
