Feminism movements in Hollywood have led to the changes in the attitude of the US especially

under the perspective of film critics and moviegoers. Current concerns about gender equality and

diversity also include the work of film critics. According to the report of USC Annenberg

Inclusion Initiative’s Critics Choice, which was based on reviews of 300 top-grossing films from

2015 – 2017 showed that there were only 21.3% of reviews written by female critics. It only

accounts for a ratio of 3.7 male reviewers to every female. This means that women are not

usually represented in critical discussions about films. But after the effects of feminism waves in

Hollywood, they have gradually formed the feminist film criticism to show their unique voices

and perspectives in every aspect of film and writing about film. They tend to more interested in a

movie with an image of a strong female protagonist without the sacrifice of a male character and

rather consider to the gender parity by artistic worth and constructive social impact than other

aspects. Feminism does not also affect female critics but also male. Some male film critics

embrace feminist concerns in their reviews although they do not deeply understand or feel films

as women do. As a result, the borders between male and female in film criticism are blurry.

Last but not least, we must listen to the constructive feedbacks of moviegoers – the main force

making the film industry exist. According to Fandango Media, an American company selling

movie ticket, they carried out a survey of 1000 female moviegoers and results in 85% want to see

more female ensemble films and 63% prefer female-driven stories told by female filmmakers

and writers. Following the trend of feminism, female moviegoers want to see more women

behind the screen as well as make female-driven stories to the big screen. Audiences are having

more awareness of the imbalance on and behind the screen. With their powerful effects, then

Hollywood must listen to their demand. Under this circumstance, more female filmmakers have

been hired, then it leads to a higher chance for women to join the film in Hollywood. Thanks to
the understanding of moviegoers about gender equality, they have drawn a wider way for female

in job positions and give them more and more career opportunities.
