Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
Engagement: They are writing about themselves so that usually helps keep students a little more interested
instead of writing about a topic they may not like.
Representation: There isn’t too many different ways this can represented but for each week I could add a
topic of interest like “what was your favorite meal this week?” or “Tell me about one cool thing you learned
this week” to make the blog posts more specific. I would only do this every now and then.
Action and Expression: By leaving the topic of interest up to the student it gives them a voice to share
something they enjoyed. It also gives them the choice of topic so it is very open ended and lets them think
back about their week and choose something that stood out to them.

Lesson idea implementation
This is will be a different take on journaling in a their own notebook. For this lesson, I would like each
student to go onto our class blog and share one exciting story about something that happened to him or her
this week. I would like at least 8 sentences but it can be as long as they would like. It will introduced under the
Flipped Classroom page with a short podcast I created describing the assignment. I want them to practice
using as many details as they can and share their thoughts on what happened. Another thing they need to
work on is providing an ending to the story and make sure it isn’t too abrupt. I will encourage the students to
comment on each other stories about something they can relate to or something they found interesting.
This will be a weekly assignment that they can turn in by the end of the week. I will review them and write
some feedback on the post for them to see or I can give the feedback in person on Monday mornings so it can
be in more detail and just one on one. As the year goes by I will expect them to improve on their postings and
become more detailed. I believe this is an easy and fun way to work on our writing skills and get to know one
another as a class.

Importance of technology:
By using this blog, we can see each other’s stories and hopefully learn something from them. We also get to
comment on each other’s posts and share even more thoughts on the event. For this particular assignment,
there won’t really be any other kinds of technology we will use. I can allow the kids to posts pictures and/or
videos if they have any to support their story.
Inspiration (optional): I am sort of basing this idea off of discussion posts I have had to do on D2L and
blackboard for different classes.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
I would encourage parents to supervise and help with this assignment to make sure their child is only sharing
appropriate content. I can always delete comments or posts on the blog if the entire class shouldn’t see them
and contact the parents to let them know. I will keep this page password protected just the important
information page so only the parents and students. I will make sure to discuss with students proper online
etiquette and what is okay to post about and what is not.

Reflective Practice:
This would just be an ongoing small assignment for the students to continue working on their writing skills. I
think this is great for student learning so that they don’t just learn something and move on. They continue
working on it and I can give them feedback before they try again the next week so they have something to
improve. This can be used to prepare them to write an entire narrative essay one day.
