GAUGE
19 sts and 7 rows = about 4 in (10 cm) in Brocade pattern.

PATTERN STITCHES
Brocade pattern (worked over a multiple of 10 sts + 6 additional sts)
Row 1 (RS): P6 *k4, p6; rep from * to end.
Row 2 and all even rows: Purl.
Rows 3, 5, and 7: Knit.
Row 9: K1, *k4, p6; rep from * to last 5 sts, k5.
Rows 11,13, and 15: Knit.
Row 16: Purl.
Rep Rows 1–16 for Brocade pattern.
STITCH EXPLANATION
M1 (make 1) An increase worked by lifting the horizontal strand lying between
needles and placing it onto the left hand needle. Knit this new stitch through the
back loop – 1 st increased.

NOTES
1. Cardigan is worked in 6 pieces, Back, Front, 2 Sleeves, Flap and Overlay.
2. Right Front of Cardigan includes a broken stripe intarsia colorwork
section.
3. The intarsia colorwork is worked by following a chart. When working from
chart, read RS rows from right to left and WS rows from left to right.
4. When working intarsia chart, use a separate ball of yarn for each color.
Twist yarns on WS to prevent holes.
5. Collar is worked from sts picked up around neck edge of Cardigan.
6. When you see 'as established' in the instructions, this means to continue
in the current pattern st. For example, to continue in a rib pattern, k the
knit sts and p the purl sts.
7. When you see ‘work even’ in the instructions, this means to continue on in
the pattern st you have established without changing the st count by
increasing, decreasing, or binding off.
BACK
With A, cast on 116 (136) sts. Work in Garter st (knit every st on every row) for 8
rows.
Note
If you prefer, you can work on a long circular needle – work back and forth in
rows, just as if working on straight needles.
Begin Brocade pattern

Beginning with Row 1, work in Brocade pattern for 16 rows.
Begin side shaping

Next Row (dec row – RS): K2tog, work Row 1 of Brocade pattern as established
to last 2 sts, k2tog – 114 (134) sts.
Continue in Brocade pattern as established AND AT THE SAME TIME, k2tog at

beg and end of every Row 1 of Brocade pattern for 7 times more – you’ll have
100 (120) sts.
Work even in pattern until piece measures about 23 in. (58.5 cm) from beg, end
with a Row 16 of Brocade pattern as the last row you work.
Shape Armholes
Continue in Brocade pattern and bind off 6 sts at beg of next 2 (4) rows, then
bind off 2 sts at beg of next 4 rows.
Then, k2tog at beg and end of every RS row 3 (5) times – 74 (78) sts rem.
Continue in pattern as established until armholes measures 9 (10) in. (23 (25.5)
cm).
Bind off.
LEFT FRONT
With A, cast on 66 (76) sts.
Work Rows 1–16 of Brocade pattern.
Begin side shaping

Next (dec) row (RS): K2tog, work Row 1 of Brocade pattern as established to
end of row.
Continue in Brocade pattern as established AND AT THE SAME TIME, k2tog at

beg of every Row 1 of Brocade pattern until 58 (68) sts rem.
Work even in pattern until piece measures same as Back to armholes, end with a
Row 16 of Brocade pattern as the last row you work.
Shape Armhole
Continue in Brocade pattern and bind off 6 sts at beg of next 1 (2) RS rows, then
2 sts at beg of next 2 RS rows.
K2tog at beg of every RS row 3 (5) times—45 (47) sts.
Continue in pattern as established until armhole measures about 7 (8) in. (18
(20.5) cm), end with a RS row as the last row you work.
Neck Shaping
For neck, bind off at beg of next WS row 6 sts once, then 2 sts twice.
Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 3 times - 32 (34) sts.
Work even in pattern as established until armhole measures same as Back

armholes, end with a WS row as the last row you work.
Next row (RS): *K1, k2tog; rep from * to last 2 (1) st(s), k2tog (k1)—21 (23) sts.
Purl one row, then bind off.
RIGHT FRONT
Note: When Row 80 of chart is complete, begin again with Row 1.
With A, cast on 66 (76) sts. Work in Garter st for 8 rows.
Begin chart
Working in St st, and beg with Row 1 of chart, and beg and end as marked for
your size, work until chart Row 16 is complete.
Begin side shaping

Next Row (dec row – RS): Work next row of chart to last 2 sts, k2tog.

Continue in chart pattern and rep dec row every 16 rows 6 more times until piece
measures about 19 in. (48.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row as the last row
you work – 59 (69) sts.
Slip sts onto spare needle.
Overlay
With A, cast on 30 (40) sts.
Work in Garter st for 6 rows.
Next Row (RS): Work in Garter st over first 4 sts, work Row 1 of Brocade pattern
to end of row.
Continue as established, keeping 4 sts in Garter st, rem sts in Brocade pattern
until piece measures about 4 1/2 in. (11.5 cm) from beg, end with a WS row as
the last row you work.
Next Row (RS): Cast on 29 sts; beg with sts just cast on, k33, work as
established to end of row – 59 (69) sts.
Next Row: Work as established to last 33 sts, knit last 33 sts.
Next 4 Rows: Work as established, keeping 33 sts in Garter st, rem 26 (36) sts
in pattern as established.
Next (joining) row (RS): Hold Right Front behind overlay with needles pointing
in the same direction, with spare needle, knit 1 st from front needle together with
1 st from back needle until all sts are joined.
Continue in Brocade pattern as established across all sts and continue side
shaping to correspond to Left Front until 58 (68) sts rem.
Work even in pattern as established until piece measures same as Back to

armholes, end with a Brocade pattern Row 15 as the last row you work.
Shape Armhole
Continue in Brocade pattern and bind off 6 sts at beg of next 1 (2) WS rows, then
2 sts at beg of next 2 WS rows.
K2tog at beg of every WS row 3 (5) times—45 (47) sts.
Continue in pattern as established until armhole measures about 7 (8) in. (18
(20.5) cm), end with a WS row as the last row you work.
Neck Shaping
For neck, bind off at beg of next RS row 6 sts once, then 2 sts twice.
Dec 1 st at same edge every other row 3 times - 32 (34) sts.
Work even in pattern as established until armhole measures same as Back

SLEEVES (make 2)
With A, cast on 46 sts. Work in Garter st for 8 rows.
Beg with Row 1 of pattern, work in Brocade pattern for 2 rows.
Note
Work increased sts into the Brocade pattern as established.
Next Row (RS): K1, M1, work in Brocade pattern to last st, M1, knit last st.
Work even in Brocade pattern for 3 rows.
Rep last 4 rows until you have 66 (70) sts.
Work even in Brocade pattern until piece measures about 16 in. (40.5 cm) from
beg, end with a WS row as the last row you work.
Shape Sleeve Cap (top of Sleeve)

Continue in Brocade pattern, and bind off 5 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 2 sts
at beg of next 4 rows – 48 (52) sts.
Dec 1 st each side every 4th row 6 (8) times (by working k2tog or p2tog, one st in
from first and last sts), then every other row 8 times - 20 sts.
Bind off 2 sts at beg of next 2 rows, then 4 sts at beg of next 2 rows.
Bind off remaining 8 sts.
FINISHING
Sew shoulder seams.
Right Front Band

From RS, with A, pick up and k 128 (135) sts evenly spaced along right front
edge.
Knit 2 rows.
Next (buttonhole) row (WS): K5, [bind off 3 sts, k12] 3 times, k to end.
Knit 3 rows.
Bind off.
Left Front Band

From RS, with A, pick up and k 128 (135) sts evenly spaced along left front edge.
Knit 6 rows.
Bind off.
Collar
From RS, with A, pick up and k31 sts along right neck edge, 41 sts along back
neck, 31 sts along left front neck – 103 sts.
Work in Garter st for 3 in. (7.5 cm).

Bind off.
Sew in Sleeves.
Sew side and Sleeve seams.
Flap
With A, cast on 26 sts. Work in Garter st for 1 in. (2.5 cm).
Bind off.
Sew Flap to Left Front.
