Unity in diversity: Quality education for all.

Good morning students, parents and to all the familiar faces here: teachers who
happened to be my classmates, batchmates, schoolmates in my highschool and
elementary days..19 years ago in this school. When I got invited to speak here, I got
excited and I immediately said “yes” to Mr. Jonard Ferrer… but eventually, I hesitant
and asked myself “Why me? Can I inspire these students in their Recognition day?

I am not rich. I am just consultant job order at DENR. There are no monuments
dedicated to me and I am living life the I never imagined that I actually enjoy and I
hope you will, too.

Nevertheless, let me start at once with two advices for the graduates. First is to follow
your heart’s desire; figure out what truly makes you happy. (Utang na loob, hindi si
jowa).Pakitapik ang katabi at sabihin happiness ay hindi pangjowa lang! But instead,
kung saan mo sasabihin “para sa akin ito”. Second is to diligently work towards your
goal. #AMBITIONGOAL muna tayo. Huwag MobileLegends GOALS or LIGAW GOALS
tayo, guys! Remember, ang love life andiyan lang pero ang AMBISYON ay hinahabol.
So, you will not be “productive” unless you find your true happiness, and you faithfully
work towards it. PINAGHIHIRAPAN ANG AMBISYON. Proactive means that all the
time, money and effort poured into your education and goal is put to good use.

The theme for today’s RECOGNITION exercises, “Unity in Diversity: Quality Education
for all ” which I can say it is a suitable description of what has been going on in our
educational system.

The courage and dedication of each and everyone in the Department of Education to
adapt k12 Education in the Philippines was a giant leap of them from what was
customed or nakasanayan.

They want to push each and everyone of you to embrace the quality education inspite of
the diversity/ differences. Feeling kasi ng iba (well, including me) ANO BA KASI
NAIISIP NG DEPED, Bakit nagpapatupad sila ng ganyan? Others say “SAYANG
COLLEGE NA SANA AKO”.

But never they know that the additional of two more years or two more grade levels,
Grade 11 and 12, will better equip these students with the necessary skills, knowledge,
and values needed for a successful future in the fields of:

 Employment
 Entrepreneurship
 Skills Development (further Technical-Vocational Learning)
 Higher Education (College)

This program was long studied by the DEPeD (kasi nung highschool kami pinagisipan
ng gawin to) because of the reason that NOT ALL of us will go to College after High
School. Some will temporarily find a job, some will undergo vocational courses in order
to land a job abroad.

In order to keep up with the reality of life and to fully equip the students to it and face
the challenge, k12 program was formulated. QUALITY EDUCATION TO ALL.
REGARDLESS IF YOU ARE POOR OR RICH, CHRISTIAN OR MUSLIMS, you are
entitled to it. So are you ready for the GIANT STEPS in the Senior High??
YES. And I am enthusiastic seeing you finishing the 12th grade.

Lastly, my last advice is DO NOT BE AFRAID TO STANDUP AFTER FAILURE.

As you heard a while ago, I am a graduate of Bachelor of Laws and Letters in the
University of Baguio and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in Saint Louis University…
and do please take note that I am not yet a lawyer. BUT to me, it became the story of my
success.

You see, studying in my chosen profession, which is LAWYER.. I lived my life to study
laws, that governs the people and the government itself… when people thinks that their
lives and properties depend on you, it gives you a self entitlement. A self centered
attitude. “Mayabang” na mundo ika nga.. I sore high for 5 years.

But when I 1st flunked the Bar Exam, it broke my wings. Masakit na pagbagsak. Then
again, my family and friends pushed me still, I took the Bar exam for the 2 nd time, still
failed it.. it broke my spirit. I do not want to take that exams again. The feeling was
unexplainable. Especially to me, who did not experience failures at all.

DEPRESSION was there. But I did not entertain it. I was pushed by my family to get up
and clean my mess in a VERY hard way. My sister even said “DO NOT GO HOME
UNTIL YOU FIND A JOB”. Well, as we all know, the only place to look for a job is
METRO MANILA. I end up as a KPO, Knowledge Processing Officer in Ortigas for 1
year. KPO is where your clienteles are foreigners. I approved/denied Australian Visa. I
was not happy. But the salary was high. Eventually, I get bored.

Then, a call from DENR Pangasinan was made. They offered me a job for Legal
Assistant. With no hesitation, I said YES. Well, when my job description is just a Legal
Assistant, from the root word itself, it says to assists legally, it was not it. They took me
as if I am Legal Officer of the office. I was terrified. There were hundreds of cases to be
handled, especially on land matters. There was a case that I cannot forget, a family in
Urbiztondo, Pangasinan was land grabbed by a certain person. In which the grandfather
was only notified, when he was about to pay their annual taxes, the Municipal Assessor
replied, “Sorry laki, agyo la ngaran may dalin”. Shocked, he went home and told his
children about it and he died due to cardiac arrest.

That brought to my senses. In my job, I do not have to become a lawyer to help those
who are in need. I am not the lawyer here. I am the judge investigator. I help those
individuals that were living in pangamba of their properties… individuals who have
nothing but their lands and yet still their only possession was titled by another person.

For about three years in the government service, helping these people is my success.
This is my success because if there’s one thing I want all of you to remember is that, we
are successful in our own ways.

BELIEVE IN YOURSELVES. No matter HOW MANY TIMES YOU STUMBLE. HOW

MANY TIMES YOU FAILED, GET UP. PRAY AND FACE THE CHALLENGES IN LIFE.

So graduates; brace your selves for the many challenges ahead and remember to learn
from them. AND please do take note of my MOTTO IN LIFE, ITS BETTER TO LEARN
FROM THE MISTAKES OF OTHERS THAN TO PERSONALLY LEARN FROM THEM.
Follow your heart’s desire, diligently work towards your goal and make everyday count.

Good luck and congratulations!
