- First,disconnectthe batteryground
cable.

disconnectingthe battery.
. For the following sfeps, if is essential
that you follow the repair manual Body
lnstallation Work, lnterior in Chapter 69.

Work on the airbag system may be
carried out only be trained
specralrsts. The relevant safety
requirements mustbe observed,see
Safety Nofes on the Airbag in the
Repair Manual (Chapter 69).

 - Turnthe steeringwheel-1' untilthe
spokeof the steeringwheel is vertical.

- Insertan approx.175 mm long

screwdriverintothe hole in the
steeringwheel retainerfrom the rear
(insertscrewdriverabout45 mm).

- Pushthe screwdriveruPwards
-arrow-.This pushesthe securing
clamp-7- backwardsand releasesthe
snap hook-3- fromthe airbag'4-.

- Turnthe steeringwheel-1- 180' and

unlockthe secondsecuringclampon
the oppositeside.

- Disconnectthe plugconnection-2- on
the airbagunitand set the airbagaside
carefully

- Turn the steeringwheel-1- to the

centreposition(wheelsare pointed
straightahead).

'3r - Removethe attachmentscrew/nut-5-.

,)E The further removal of the steering

wheel depends on the vehicle's
equipment (vehicles with and without
ESP).Refer to the work steps in Repair
Manual, Body Installation Work,
Interior (Chapter69).

Note:
The reset ring with slip ring -Fl38- must
not be rotated out of the centre position
(securewith adhesivetape if necessary).

 - Removethe three attachmentscrews
3 -6- and removethe lower part of the
steeringcolumnsheathing - -fromthe
catch.

I - Removethe self-diagnosis connector

columnsheathing.

- Removethe upperpartof the steering
columnsheathing-3-.

- Removethat attachmentscrews-1-
and pullthe steeringcolumnswitch-2-
forwardsslightly.

- Disconnectall of the plugconnections
to the steeringcolumnswitch.

- Removethe steeringcolumnswitch.

- Pulltheexistingdirectionalindicator

windshield wiperswitch-2-.

 - Replacethe directionalindicator
switchusingthe directionalindicator
switchwith CCS containedin the
servicekit.

- Pushthe directionalindicatorswitch
-1- with CSS in -arrow direction-
firmlyintothe connectorof the
windshieldwiperswitch-2-.

- Installthe steeringcolumnswitchonto
the steeringcolumn.

- Tightenthe three attachmentscrews

- Re-attachall plug connections-2'to

the steeringcolumnswitch.

- Connectthe connectorhousingof the

directionalindicatorswitchwith CSS
-1-to the plug-2-of thewiringharness
containedin the servicekit.

 - Securethe new wiringharnesswith a
cableconnector-1-,as shownin the
illustration.

- Lay the CSS wiringharnessintothe

) footwellnearthe fuse box/relayplate.

- Turn the lockingbutton-arrow- of the

f, i'f:F coverfor the relayplate(driver'sside)

- Openthe coverfor the relayplateand
unclipit fromthe dash paneltrim.

Nofe;
Removal of the reinforcingplate -1- is not
always required for removing the relay -3-
, but it makes it more easily accessible.
- Removethe stiffeningplate-1-.

 - Loosenthe securingclampto the left
and rightof the relaYPlate.

- Pushthe left retainingclampoutward

untilthe anti-twistdeviceon the relay
plateis pulledout.

- Pullthe relayplateout of the retaining

clamps.

- Uncoverthe existingblack4'way plug

-1-(T4f)behindthe relaYPlate.

- Connectthe black4-wayplug'1'(T4f)
to the 4-way connectorhousingof the
CSS wiringharness.

Nofe;
Secure /oose wiring harnesses with
appropriatecable cliPs.

Furtherassemblyis carriedout in reverse

sequence.Please observethe following
notes:

. lf present,the markings-A- and 'B'on
the steering column and steering wheel
must be in alignment.
. Steering wheel attachmentscrew:
tighteningtorque 67 Nm;for current
values, see repair manual.

Important!
Before connecting the batterY,
observe the following safetY
regulations,'
- There must be no Persons in the
vehicle
- Switch on ignition
- Close doors
- Connect hattery

 Activating the cruise control system
with VAS 5051/8:

- Before activating the cruise control

system,interrogatethe CCS errorlog.

- Connect tester VAS 5051/8 to

diagnosticconnectionwith cable VAS
5051/3and switchon tester
VAS5O51IB.

- Press the button for "Vehicle Self-

VAS 5051 Diagnosis"-arrow- on the display.
