Advocacy Plan

LM/CE 5010

Plan Goal 1. For the 2018-2019 school year, develop a library mission and vision
statement.
2. For the 2018-2019 school year, begin to revitalize the library space
by changing the design and weeding outdated and uncirculated
material.
3. During the 2018-2019 school year, create more school community
awareness about the library program and services by updating and
improving the library website.
4. During the 2018-2019 school year, collaborate with the Barton
Public Library librarians to offer and support literacy events
especially create and bridge a summer reading program.
5. During the 2018-2019 school year, volunteer to become a
makerspace superuser to gain imperative knowledge and experience
utilizing the tools and equipment as well as become a resource for
other staff members.
6. During the 2018-2019 school year, survey students, staff and parents
to find out what materials and services they really want and need.
7. During the 2018-2019 school year, communicate with each
classroom teacher to learn how I may be able to collaborate
With them to help meet their student needs.
8. Long-range goal (3-5 years), transform current library space
into a Library Common.

My plan is directed at the school principal, staff, students, parents and

Barton community (including the school board).

Message To my principal: I want to demonstrate to Principal Wheelock that the

school library can and should be a vital part of the school community while
contributing and supporting all students to achieve academic success.

I will accomplish this by providing Principal Wheelock with newly

developed library Mission and Vision statements, provide relevant research
articles, provide reports showing weeding data, provide quarterly circulation
statistics and completed collaborative projects and request/ accept requests
to provide Professional Development training/in-service to staff.
To my staff: I want to convey that I am an enthusiastic and available
collaborative partner to help support their classroom learning standards as
well as provide an adjunctive skill set (information literacy, digital
citizenship, technology integration, and makerspace) that will assist them to
help all students to achieve academic success while concurrently
encouraging/developing a general love of reading and life-long learning.

I will accomplish this by emailing all teachers an introductory email that

includes a survey to find out classroom reading lists, planned lesson
subjects, how they and their classroom currently utilizing the
library/services, what they would like to see in the library, what would be
the most helpful for their students, and if they are open to collaboration and
if so how they see my services being the most beneficial. I will also email
staff a quarterly newsletter and provide professional development.

To my community: I want to convey that the library program benefits

students by encouraging and supporting the love of reading and creates
lifelong learners.

I will accomplish this by updating the library website, posting quarterly

newsletters to the website, suggest monthly meetings with the public
librarians to coordinate services (hopefully initiate an after school reading
club and a summer reading program), send newsletters and quarterly reports
to the school board and Barton Parents Club (BPC) and send press releases
to the local paper.

To my parents: I want to convey that the library program benefits families

by encouraging and supporting the love of reading and creates lifelong
learners.

I will accomplish this by updating the library website, sending home

quarterly newsletters (will also be posted on the school and library website),
and email an introductory email with short anonymous survey that inquires
about current reading practices at home, literature/internet availability at
home, general reading values, interest and availability to volunteer in the
library and any interest in starting an adult reading club or family check out
time at the library (will discuss with Principal Wheelock beforehand).

To my students: I want to convey that the library is a fun place (to learn)
and that I am an available resource to them.

I will accomplish this by updating the library website, sending home

quarterly newsletters ( will also be posted on the school and library website),
at the beginning of school ask all students to complete a short anonymous
survey to inquire about reading preferences, reading habits, what literature
and services they would like to see in the library, what services they would
most like the librarian (me) to provide, any desire for an after-school reading
club, revitalizing the library space to be more welcoming and create fun
themes/activities to engage the students.

Team Short term goal: Develop a rapport and identify staff members that I can
trust and collaborate with to ensure the library program is supporting the
overall goals and mission of the school as well as provide support to
improve the library program. Prior to school starting I have identified the
following collaborators; Principal Kim Wheelock, Jeff and Chris (tech
support), Toni and Joanne (public librarians) and Lisa (BPC Vice-Chair).

Long term goal (2-3 years): form an advisory council with administration
(Principal Wheelock), staff (at least 3 key members), parents (2 or 3),
students (2 or 3) and prominent community members/businesses (2 or 3).
Ideally the Advisory Council would provide input, fundraising support, and
on-going guidance to help the Library Commons initiative come to fruition.
