DQ2-1

"According to your authors, what are the major differences between an oral culture and a
written culture?"
According to our reading this week the major difference between oral cultures and those with
written to medication skills mainly consist of people that live in an oral culture tend to perceive the
world as a media in concrete because most of their conversations are face-to-face they can see the
subtle changes in facial expressions as well as the inflection and tone of voice. With a written culture
the written word tends the standalone and the writer must create the context to define the situations
being written about. The lack of contextual clues makes writing a more formal activity than an oral
conversation would be.

DQ2-2
"In the early days of computer-based communication, and before the advent of graphical
user interfaces (GUI), what methods were used to create 'images'?" Give an example. In
what form does that method continue today?"
In the early days of computer of computer-based communication without the ability to use a
graphical interface the only way to do images and chat was with the keyboard by using the
mathematical symbols and punctuation symbols in certain orders to create a graphic. I think the
form that it continues today is in the emoticons that are built into most Programs now.
DQ2-3
"Discuss at least two of the differences found in the styles used by men and women on the
Internet for conversation."
According to our reading this week men tend to criticize and ridicule other members of group
conversations, as well as trying to assert their authority and challenge others, whereas women tend
to be more nurturing and caring in their approach to online conversations.

DQ2-4
"Discuss at least two elements of web sites that lend themselves to 'rhetorical
analysis.' Give specific examples."
According to our reading this week rhetorical analysis is an examination of visual messages being
communicated through electronic media, an example of this would be the graphics on a website that
are designed to catch your attention or distract you,
DQ2-5
"Define 'paralinguistic'."
According to our book the definition of para-language the term can apply both to spoken and
written forms of linguistic communications and written language paralanguage is the visual
appearance of written materials, including punctuation spelling and neatness in the use of open
space for margins between the words.
DQ2-6
"Based on everything you've read in this course and your work in other communication
courses, is the Internet a mass medium?"
After all the years I’ve spent in college taking online courses I would have to say that yes the
Internet is a mass medium as far as communication is concerned.

DQ2-7
"What elements of human communication are intensified by communication using Internet
technology? Are there elements of human communication that are rendered less intense?"
According to our reading this week some of the elements of communication that are intensified by
the Internet are connections with friends and family, it helps us to maintain better relationships, as
well as bringing people together. Some of the parts of communication that are diminished by the
Internet it can blur the boundary between work and personal life, it allows people to give voice to
hate speech or rhetoric, it can also increase the fears of hatemongers.
DQ2-8
Many people believe that Saffo's '30 year rule' no longer applies. That is, many people
believe that technology is advancing much more rapidly. Your instructor believes that
observation is flawed - especially for younger people. For example, "cell phones" seem to
be getting better every day. One can indeed make that argument. However, the underlying
technology of "mobile telephones" goes back to shortly after World War II. Of course, in
those days, very few people had "mobile phones." That changed in the very late 70s such
that the technology was widespread - and that calculates to about 30 years.
I do believe that we are living in a very fast-paced technological world and that things change quickly
on a daily basis. But with that being said I have to disagree with us Saffo though our technologies
may be changing the concept of many of the technology such as texting and cell phones have been
around for 50 years so I don’t feel that the 30 year rule has been condensed to 15.
DQ2-9
"Define, in your own words, the term 'technological determinism.' Why is this an issue as
we study Internet communication? Does the term only apply to Internet communication?"
I believe technological determinism is an issue why we study the Internet communication in that it
has forever changed the way people communicate in our modern world, but I don’t believe
technological determinism only applies to Internet communication I do believe any type of new
technology can change our society or culture. If we look at man throughout history new
technologies is constantly changed our cultures the invention of the spear helped hunters to survive
better in their environments, as well as farming totally change our culture when the technology of
how to grow our own food became available to us. So I do believe technological determinism
applies to more than just the Internet.

DQ2-10
"How would you define the term 'cyberliteracy'? Do you feel this type of literacy is as
important as the ability to read, write, manipulate numbers, etc.? Why or why not? Give
specific support for your opinion."
I believe I would define the term cyber literacy as the ability to use and manipulate computer and
Internet technologies. And I do feel that this type of literacy is very important in today’s advanced
technology world. The reason why is look at many more students are able to go to UIS simply
because of the Internet and online courses. I wouldn’t be getting my degree this may if it wasn’t for
online courses because I would’ve been able to get to UIS I don’t live in Springfield. So I think that’s
one way that cyber literacy is important to all people.
