4. Objectives: To have students understand how gender roles and societal expectations
affect who can perform certain jobs.

6. Materials Needed: Paper, Crayons/Markers

Description:

a. Provide each student with a blank sheet of paper and a marker or pencil.
b. Ask students to draw pictures that represent different professions such as construction
worker or teacher.
c. Collect the drawings and add up how many men or women were represented in each
drawing.
d. Use the data to discuss how gender roles and societal expectations impact individuals’
employment opportunities.

Follow-up Activities:

1. Have students discuss in small groups why they chose to portray their worker as a woman
or man. As a follow-up question, ask students to think a little deeper and discuss why
they think they chose that gender to perform that role.
2. As a class, have a discussion to present what each group concluded from their answers.

Assessment:

1. Were the students enjoying the activity? What showed that?

3. Did the students show competency of the of the overall objective of the activity? How?
