Unit 12

Using social network sites in language classes can be helpful and distracting at the
same time in my opinion. Helpful in a way that students are on a familiar site, they know how
to use it. Distracting on the other hand, if they start to do everything else on the site except
learning/studying. Yet I do not have students, but in the future, I would like to use social sites
in my classes. I have mentioned, in the previous journal, Twitter. I still think that that
platform can be a good tool to students for practising different kind of elements of grammar.
By using e.g. twitter they leave a kind of ‘digital footprint’ and maybe after a year or two they
can look back on what and how did they write or their use of English language.

Unit 13

During this course podcasts are somehow did not come into my mind until now.
Spotify’s podcast feature and Apple Music’s are perfect ways to help students improve their
listening skills and passive vocabulary. Listening to authentic audios can help students in
many ways. They get familiarized with different kind of topics, or even use of language
structures. An idea struck me like a lightning, if I record a class where students are
speaking/talking/chatting with each other, then at the end of the year I play that record in class
they can hear and realize how much did their language use improved.

Unit 14

YouTube  online videos. If I mention videos in IT class always YouTube is the first
and almost only answer. In English classes I think it is important for students to not only hear
but see some authentic material about what they are learning at the moment. For example,
WWF videos about endangered species, or deforestation. We have to pay attention to pre-,
while- and post listening tasks! In this way they will not only watch a video and that is all to
them, but they will focus on it. Also they are online, but a lot of times we can bump into
technical problems like not having internet connection in that time when our class is, we
should, if we can, download the videos and take them with us.
