TRANSMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM VERSION

IDENTIFICATION BY MODEL
Automatic Transmissions and control system technology has evolved through the model
years. The evolution is due to continued refinement and total vehicle system communica-
tion integration. Same version transmission control systems in many cases are different
from vehicle to vehicle increasing the total number of system variations.

Version ID - 1
4HP 24 EH

4HP 22 EH transmissions were the first electronic controlled transmissions on BMW vehi-
cles in the US market. The 1986 model year 535i, 635i and 735i vehicles where equipped
with the first version control system identified as E7. Through the lifespan of the transmis-
sion two additional control systems where phased in (late E7 and E9). The 4HP 24 trans-
mission was introduced in 1988 with the debut of the 750iL (E32).

Control Vehicle Engine Year

Identical in function to the 4HP 22, the 4HP 24 was
System designed to handle the higher torque output of the M70
GS 1.27 750iL, 850i M70 1988-91 V12 engine. Components where changed and/or modi-
GS 1.29 750iL, 850i M70 1992-94 fied providing the higher torque rating. Refer to TRI 24 01
87 for introductory information.

This course (ST057) will only cover the E9 ver-

sion of the 4HP 24 EH transmission. For addi-
tional, diagnosis and troubleshooting information
on 4HP 22 & 24 EH transmissions, refer to
Understanding AEGS (SD 89-20).

318i,is,iC M44 1996-97
Z3 1.9, 318ti M44 1996-98
The change to the 270R designation is the result of
328i,is,iC M52 1996-98 design changes of the Ravigneaux planetary gear set
323is,iC M52 1998 which modified the output ratios as well as reducing it’s
Z3 2.8 M52 1997-
torque rating.
All A4S 270R transmissions are
controlled by an 88 pin control
module.

Power stage control of the valve body solenoids was

changed from switched power to switched ground.

Additionally, the 528i E39 is equipped with an AGS ver-

sion of the TCM which added four wheel speed input
signals to the system.

SYSTEM FEATURES:

• 88 Pin Control Module

• Adaptive Hydraulic Pressure Control
• Torque Converter Lock Up
Control (on/off).
• Reverse Lock out Function
• Shift solenoid control (all free-
wheel shifts)
• Shift lock solenoid control

IDENTIFICATION GETRIEBESTEURUNG

The control system is accurately

identified by electronic display on the
DIS/MoDiC and by a visual check on
the control module.

Always confirm the identification

against possible part number supers-
ession by checking the EPC for the
specific transmission. Troubleshooting by means of
perciptible symptoms: "#"

TRANSMISSION IDENTIFICATION

The transmission identification plate also offers valuable parts ordering information. Similar
to the control system, the transmission itself is always subject to changes due to refine-
ments in its valve body, clutches, electrical components, etc.

Prior to parts ordering always verify what part is

being replaced by checking the data plate and
compare it with the EPC for possible superses-
sion.

In this example, the original equipment had been

upgraded and reidentified by a new 2 character
code.
