Refuting Someone’s Work

In the article, “How to Support Healthy Weight Loss”, by Brent Wilson, from ​Marshall’s

Health and Natural Therapy​, says that because the metabolism slows as you age, the best way to

lose weight is to speed the metabolism back up with their “Go Capsi-Slim” vitamin pills.

This article says many things that are partially true, but are skewed to be in their favor.

The first sentence of the article is: “One of the main reasons we gain weight, especially as we get

older, is our metabolism slows down”, and although the body’s metabolism does slow down as

we age, that is not one of the ​main​ reasons for weight gain. The main reasons people gain weight

today is that they over eat and don’t get enough exercise or sleep. In our fast paced society, it is

so easy to go through a drive thru than actually cook a healthy meal, and when we do cook a

meal, we often eat too much. This is what causes people to be overweight, and there are

definitely many ways to overcome the slowing down of our metabolism as we age. The article

also says “Among the most important ingredients in Go Capsi-Slim is Capsimax, which has won

awards for its ability to give people the metabolic benefits of red hot peppers without irritation”;

however, I say that although capsaicin may have some metabolic benefits, it is unhealthy for the

body to take in capsaicin in such high and direct amounts. When the vitamin capsule dissolves in

the stomach acid, it will cause the stomach acid to be more acidic and cause things like heartburn

or it can damage the stomach lining because of the persistent use. Capsaicin is the reason that

many people experience heartburn after eating spicy food. So, overall, capsaicin probably does

more damage than help and the body isn’t able to use all of the vitamin for metabolism because it

naturally sees it as unnecessary after a certain point and discretes the extra in the urine. The

general basis for the article is that their vitamin is a “healthy and natural” alternative to diet and

exercise to lose weight. I believe that saying it is healthy and natural is only a marketing scheme

to get people to buy their product even though its healthier for someone to put in the work to lose

weight. Vitamin supplements are not necessary for anyone unless they have a deficiency of a

certain vitamin in their body. Any extra vitamins the body doesn’t use and just gets rid of it. The

best way to lose weight is by habitual exercise and by eating healthy. If you are eating healthy

there would be no reason to have an extra vitamin supplement to support your weight loss

because you would be getting all your vitamins and nutrients through the food you eat, which is

by far the best way for the body to receive the nutrients.
