Our world is now full of gadgets, it makes our lives easier and more technological.

Students, workers, or everything and everyone on this earth is now having a life with more

ease from these so called gadgets. A man named Neil De Grasse Tyson once said that

“Dreams about the future are always filled with gadgets which means soon the world will

be full of gadgets someday, but ill this affect us in a positive way or in a negative way?”

What has these gadgets brought to us? Does it really make our lives easier or

lazier Due to Charles Babbage work, it started a new life for all of us. This research is

about how gadgets affect the life of future generations. It is always a big question because

our lives or future is always what ifs. As Doctor Jose Rizal once said “Ang kabataan ang

pag-asa ng bayan” and will the internet bring the future generation lower or higher?

Technology has been found to be a negative impact and a positive impact to

children at school and at their houses. This research has a lot of importance because it

could give us information that we need for the possible future. People who are born in

1981 up to today are called millennials. What will you feel if you’re living in the modern

generation without cellphone or any access to social media? Our world today is

embracing the technology the machines are upgraded, the people are getting more

smarter as they discover new things. Through this gadgets the impossible gets possible

SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS

The study about gadgets is one of the most important study in the world. Because it is

also to raise awareness to children on how gadgets can affect your health and how your

relationship with your parents is slowly decreasing because of the use of gadgets. Even

though, gadgets can help us in our needs during assignments and other stuffs, it can also

be very dangerous if you became addicted in using this. And when you get addicted into

this, then you're life might change. Gadgets are taking over, there are some kids have

already their own smartphones, laptops, etc… The number one problem in using this

gadgets is radiation. It has an effect in our eyes. It can make our eyesight blurry if you're

not careful. Your body absorbs radiation and you'll never know that you're being weak

because of it. That is only some of the problems or causes of these gadgets to the future

generation. We want to make a research for people who are using gadgets whether it

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

EFFECTS OF GADGETS IN STUDENTS’ PERFORMANCE

Do students still need textbooks? The modern gadgets have a great impact on

the learners’ academic performance. In the year where electronic gadgets are not yet

invented like computers, students are not yet engage in activities using technologies.

Learners rely on books and visits library facilities to study, read their notes and review

their lessons. And now that the gadgets are available to all pupils, learners achieved low

academic grades. Technology has always been advancing throughout the years. It has

been made big impact on people especially lifestyle .

Dealing with the modern gadgets occupied a major position in our daily lives. Though

they were invented to make life better for us in the first place. It is an undeniable fact

that many of the gadgets have negative effects and influence upon the quality of

pupils‘ performance in many ways.

As they go home, they don’t open their books, they don’t do their homework

and projects, they play games using computers , these games have effects on the

learning experiences of the pupils. A negative effect of these gadgets on students can

be the fact that they can become obsessive and the students can neglect everything

else, like their social life, their family and friends. Is not a bad thing to have a computer,

but is a bad thing to spend all your life in front of it pretending that everything else

doesn’t exist. We must have limitations in everything we do.

7
A decreased attention span is one of the negative effects of gadgets. Before

smartphones and tablets were mainstream, the average attention span was about 12

seconds. However, research suggests this has dropped to about eight seconds, which

is a shorter attention span than an average goldfish. If students struggle to concentrate

in class, their grades may suffer. Research also suggests that people who spend a lot of

time on gadgets may be more easily distracted, meaning it's harder for them to

complete necessary tasks. Students who become addicted to gaming, texting or social

media may try to do this in class, which may disrupt their learning and lead to

disciplinary action. At home, it may interfere with their study time.

Technology has always been advancing throughout the years. It has made a big

impact on people especially on lifestyle. One of the many things that are affected in the

society. In our present generation, students are obsessed in using Gadgets. They

usually want to buy the latest release of these Gadgets to satisfy their desires in terms

of entertainment and getting the newest of the new. As a result, students tend to involve

gadgets in their everyday lives including in their studies. Students tend to use up more

time in using gadgets than on studying. This apparently affects the student’s studying

habits and academic performance.

This study aims to know how gadgets affect the studies. As we know, gadgets

are now part of our daily basis. Dealing With the Impact of Modern Gadgets on our

Lives

Whether we like it or not, electric appliances and gadgets have occupied a major

position in our day to day lives. Though they were invented to make life better for us in

the first place, it is an undeniable fact that many of the gadgets have a negative

8
influence upon the quality of our lives in some ways. As we cannot live without them in

this modern world and they are a necessary evil, we have to find ways to reduce the

negative impact of those modern appliances. A gadget is a device or appliance having a

unique purpose and function.

Gadgets affect the study habit of a student in many aspects. Using gadgets a

student start becoming dependable, and careless and do all his or her work with the

help of gadgets. He also becomes drowsy and wants to do all his work in shortcut. In

this age of technology no part of life is deprived from the impact it has created on life

pattern and so education is no exception. Education has undergone a revolutionary

change with students being seen with laptops, tabs, and other gadgets.

The effect of these gadgets on students can be the fact that they can become

obsessive and the students can neglect everything else, like their social life, their family

and friends. Is not a bad thing to have a computer, but is a bad thing to spend all your

life in front of it pretending that everything else doesn’t exist.

9
NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF EXCESSIVE GADGET USE

Excessive use of gadgets such as mobile phones, tablets, and computer desktops can

cause physical and mental damage to children.

According to a study, a child will likely to become overweight and develop seizure

and vision problems when they spend too much time using gadgets. In Central Visayas,

one of the regions in the Philippines, a National Nutrition Council (NNC) Region 7 study

reported that 3% of children are considered as obese and overweight.

A health article also states that the thinking and emotional development during

the first five years of a child is crucial. Allowing them to spend more than two hours

day can impact irreversible damage such as slow cognitive development and attention

deficit.“Parents and caregivers have the greatest responsibility to discipline children and

control their exposure to gadgets,” said Dr. Parolita Mission, head of the NNC Region 7.

10
THE EFFECTS OF GADGETS ON THE YOUTH

The young and trendy generation of today judge themselves, according to the kind

of gadgets they posses. The popularity of gadgets among youth has ensured that newer

and trendier gadgets are introduced very passing day. The addiction of gadgets has been

such among one and all that it has become unthinkable of a life without a gadget. The

effect of these gadgets has been tremendous, and it is often debated that whether the

impact that it has made on the youth is a positive or negative one.

Video Games and Computer games can be listed as the gadget which has

influenced the youth the most. Several researches indicate that these games can have

a positive effect on the youth's mind. However sometimes it may cause terrible changes

in behaviors. It was seen that playing video games or computer games actually help the

young people in concentrating much better. There are games which require you to use

your brains and those games may indeed prove to be helpful. Also it was seen that it

has a very good impact on the motor skills and spatial skills of today's youth. However

these games may also result in the child getting absolutely isolated from the society.

There is a tendency to get engrossed in the games, and forget everything else. Also

there are chances that they might tend to confuse between the virtual world and real

world. When you are using a gadget like a video game it is important to remember that

whatever you are doing is going on in the virtual world. It would be nothing short of

foolery in trying to emulate those things in the real world. Gadgets like computers or

video games may turn to be very addictive. This is another worry as because these

things are meant to be past times, and never should it be preferred over family or social

commitments. Thus it is important to remain aware of your responsibilities while using

11
your favorite gadget.

MP3 players another popular gadget that has found its feet among the youth also

has its pros and cons. It may soothe your soul when you are doing nothing, or even

doing some work which is less intensive. Listening to music may also help to

concentrate better at times. However listening to music for long periods of time in a high

volume, may cause hearing problems in the near future which is extremely dangerous.

12
EDUCATION

The Internet has become a great tool for learning. You can google any information you

need rather than spend time in the library or attend the course online without leaving

home. Yet, tech involvement doesn’t always guarantee the quality of education. Children

sometimes overuse technology in the classroom which obviously affects the learning

process in a negative way. Plagiarism and cheating have increased while analysis and

critical thinking have declined. This puts young generation thinking abilities in jeopardy.

Various studies claim that the more students use entertainment technologies like games

or social media, the less they perform academically. Instead of reading and doing

homework, modern kids indulge in entertainment. A similar situation goes for the Internet:

using the Web to search information is linked to higher grades while online gaming or

socializing is associated with lower exam results. The reason for it is the distraction

caused by games, messages, and videos. Young people have a hard time focusing

attention at the lessons and resisting impulsive behavior.

13
GADGETS HAVE THEIR PLACE IN EDUCATION, BUT THEY’RE NO SUBSTITURE

FOR KNOWLEDGE

For some, this generation of digital natives are using technology in collaborative

and social ways that will revolutionist learning. Others worry about the damage these

devices are doing to their concentration spans and their ability to think deeply.

So what is the truth about technology and education? Is it better to read War and

Peace on a Kindle or on paper? Or should we forgo 19th-century novels completely in

favor of co-creating our own stories on Facebook? As a recent New Scientist article

acknowledged, the rapid pace of technological change means large-scale studies of

many of these issues are lacking. However, there is some reliable research.

For example, there’s good evidence that one of the most popular claims made for

technology is false. It has been said by many – from head teachers to union reps to

Today presenters – that the internet reduces the importance of knowing facts. However,

research from cognitive science shows the vital importance of remembering facts. When

we think, we use working memory and long-term memory. Long-term memory is vast,

but working memory is limited to about four to seven items and is easily overloaded. By

committing facts to long-term memory, we free up precious space in our working

memory to manipulate those facts and combine them with new ones.

That’s why it’s so important for pupils to learn their times tables: memorizing

them doesn’t stifle conceptual understanding but rather enables it. We also need a

framework of facts in long-term memory to make sense of what we find on the internet;

studies show that pupils frequently make errors when asked to look up unfamiliar

14
knowledge. Long-term memory is not a bolted-on part of the mind that we can

outsource to the cloud. It is integral to all our thinking processes; researchers even

suggest it may be “the seat of human intellectual skill”.

While technology won’t remove the need for us to remember facts, it may make it

easier for us to learn them. Another big insight from cognitive psychology is that we

remember what we think about. In the words of Prof Dan Willingham of the University of

Virginia, memory is the residue of thought.

At first sight, technology may not seem as though it will be very helpful here.

Pop-up message alerts, ever-changing websites, and enticing hyperlinks make it very

hard for us to think about what we are supposed to. North American studies show that

university students frequently multitask on their laptops during lectures, and that those

who do so understand less than students who concentrate solely on the lecture. Even if

we switch off the internet, computers can still distract. Willingham gives an example of

pupils working on a presentation about the causes of the Spanish civil war who spent

most of their time experimenting with the different animations available in Powerpoint.

However, while distraction may hinder learning, technology doesn’t always have

to lead to distraction. The striking thing about many computer games is that while they

often involve quite monotonous tasks, they still prove incredibly addictive. People

playing Tetris don’t seem to struggle to ignore distractions. So one potential solution for

the distraction problem is to design educational games that grab and hold attention in

the same way that computer games do. Duolingo and Khan Academy, two popular

learning apps, offer points and badges when pupils complete challenges. Bruno Reddy,

a former head of maths at the highly successful King Solomon Academy, has developed

15
Times Tables Rock Stars, a game where pupils become “rock gods” if they answer

math questions in under a second.

Even in the case of such promising apps, we still have to put in time, effort and

thought if we want to learn. Herbert Simon, a pioneer of cognitive psychology, wrote that

“although we have a reasonable basis for hope that we may find ways to make learning

processes more efficient, we should not expect to produce the miracle of effortless

learning”. The immense computing power we possess definitely has the potential to

make learning easier – but only if we acknowledge it will never make it effortless.

16
EFFECTS ON GADGETS ON YOUTH, STUDENTS

Nowadays when students get home from school, do they greet their parents or

guardians and relatives? Do they help in household chores? Do they actually do their

homework immediately? Or do they simply get busy and focused on their cell phones and

gadgets all day?

Contemporary technological inventions have intimately touched many lives,

especially teenagers and kids who have developed special fondness, if not addiction to

various” gadgets.” They seem to have lost their sense of rational priorities because

gadgets have immeasurably distracted from almost all other serious concerns.

Most of today’s young people have invested much their time on electronic

communications – Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, computer games and social media.

Needless to stress, their sense of self discipline, study habits and school performance

have significantly been affected. The gadget distractions have made students forget the

things they should be responsible for, particularly school work.

To tell the truth, most students seldom prepare for their projects, and don’t do their

homework assignments properly. Thus, they often cram classroom recitations and

examinations come. Worse, and this seems to be the biggest influence of all, they rather

stay home than go to school, because social media/gadgets are more amusing than

listening to lectures and classroom discussions by their teachers.

17
Witnessing students fumbling endlessly with their gadgets has become irksome in

general and an eyesore to many. Instead of having time to have communication with their

loved ones, they tend to spend most of their time in their room being with their gadgets..

Their health is also affected as they forgot to eat at the right time. They are likewise prone

to develop poor eyesight because of the undue exposure to radiation from their gadgets.

Gadgets, however, also offer advantages and positive effects. For certain,

technology has contributed much progress worldwide. In school work, gadgets make

information gathering and research very convenient. These are most helpful in preparing

projects, terms papers, reaction papers, book reports, etc. Most of all, gadgets make

communications with their families, relatives, friends and schoolmates faster and easy.

Generally, technology and gadgets have merits and demerits. Students, in

particular, just need to have discipline within them and must set boundaries or limitations

in their personal lifestyles. It is simply a matter of intelligent choice.

18

CONCLUSION

1. Everything is good if you use it in a positive way or bad if we use it in a negative way.

Some suggestions have been given above to help parents about limiting their child’s

exposure to gadgets. This is difficult to keep them away from gadgets but we can limit

their time. Encouraging child to use it in educational field or study purpose can lead to

drastic change in their lives. It can help them to enhance their skills. Use of gadgets in a

constructive way can lead to healthier and efficient minds. A lot of research can be

conducted on how gadgets affect children in other ways.

2. Technology has been found to have its negative impact on academic performance on

most of children. There are many technological gadgets to which children are addicted.

They waste their valuable time on these silly gadgets without worrying about the

studies. This is resulting in their poor academic performance.

34
RECOMMENDATION

In our society today, the effect of these gadgets on students can be the fact that they

can become obsessive and the students can neglect everything else, like their social

life, their family and friends.

Is not a bad thing to have a computer, but is a bad thing to spend all your time in front of

it pretending that everything else doesn’t exist.

Gadgets are essential to us but students must know their limitations, they should treat

their gadgets as mechanism and not as life, students must focus to their education and

social life.

From all these gadgets and busy world that circled us people should have discipline to

manage their time wisely.

We only live once so everyday make yourself productive so that your story may inspire

others.

Gadgets help us to do our task way easier and most of the people are leaning on these

gadgets, for all these gadgets helping us, students must know how to strive for their

goals.

Students should understand that in order to succeed in life they must focus on their goal

and make a step to achieve it.
