 How can nonfiction books help us find facts to research our animal of the day?

 Animal research packets

5. Pre-Lesson Assignment and/or Prior Knowledge


 Students will be familiar with nonfiction texts.
 Students will have listened to read alouds and pulled out the facts to fill in their animal
research books before.
6. Lesson Beginning
 I will call students to the carpet by table and review the fiction versus nonfiction anchor
chart. I will reference the fiction book Henny Penny by H. Werner Zimmermann that the
students listened to in the morning, for comparison purposes.
 I will explain to students what captions are in a nonfiction books, and show them that
they can help find facts.
7. Instructional Plan
 Before beginning to read the Fox book I will review what we have learned about
nonfiction text.
 I will read aloud the book to students, pausing to point out the captions that accompany
the photographs.
 Students will be dismissed back to their table and be instructed to take out a pencil and
their research packet.
 I will place the poster size version of the sheet they are filling in on the front board.
 As a whole class we will fill in the blanks on the paper. Students will be called on to
share with the class what they think the answer is based on what they heard in the read
aloud.
 Students will fill in their blanks in their packets, as I fill them in on the poster.
 Then students will practice planning a fact sentence about foxes. They will count out the
words on their fingers and raise their hand when they are ready to share.
 Students will be called on and they can share their sentence. Then we will write one as a
whole class on the paper.
8. Differentiation
 For a student who has trouble writing their letters I will write the words in highlighter on
their paper and have them trace the words.
 Students who finish early will be encouraged to begin their fox picture on the page next
to their facts.

9. Questions
 What are features of nonfiction text?
 What do we notice about this page? What is under the picture?
 What did we learn about foxes?

10. Classroom Management


 Students will be told to sit on their assigned carpet squares.
 Students will be reminded of the rules when they are on the carpet and doing small group
work.

11. Transitions
 Students will be called to the carpet by table number.
 Students will be dismissed from the carpet by square color.

12. Closure
 Students draw a fox to match their facts page.
