DOCUMENTATION

A. Introduction of the Seminar

Students of BSED – 1A and 1B, with the support of their EL04 instructor Mr.
John Erick F. Cauzon, organized a one day seminar-workshop on “Teaching Techniques
and Activities in English Language Classroom" on May 09, 2019 in Baliwag
Municipality Conference Hall. The seminar aimed to provide participants with updated
knowledge and skills in teaching towards communicative approach. The contents covered
at the seminar included: Enhancing learning motivation, Adapting new/fresh materials,
Designing engaging activities and Teaching pronunciation.
The dignitaries present during the event were Vice President for Academic
Affairs and Research, Dr. Emiterio L. Tiburcio, Program Director of College of
Education, Dr. Editha C. Marcos, and the two respected resource speakers, Ms. Felina
Gail Mar and Mrs. Lalaine L. Mañosca.
The program started at 12:30 pm for the registration and followed by the
invocation and singing of the National Anthem and Baliwag Polytechnic Hymn. The
welcome remarks was given by Ms. Jinkay Cisneros, BSED – 1B student. She
highlighted the importance of continuous learning and enhancing of skills for teachers.
She mentioned that educators should be kept up to date to new teaching techniques so as
not to become obsolete in the modern world. It was then followed by an inspirational
speech delivered by Dr. Editha C. Marcos.

B. Resource Speaker 1: Ms. Felina Gail Mar

After a warm introduction by Mr. John Erick F. Cauzon, Ms. Felina Gail Mar
opened her lecture by giving an overview of different teaching techniques that are most
helpful in teaching English as a second language. She started by giving the history of the
Berlitz method and how effective it is in teaching English. The principles presented were
almost the same as the Direct Method in which Ms. Mar further explained. Aside from
explaining the techniques and principles, she also shared her experiences in using the

iii
method firsthand. There were also some examples of activities and lessons she made that
properly utilizes the method, together with some tips for further improvement.
She then moved on to explain what IELTS is and how it is important. The
participants were all taken aback by a surprise activity prepared by Ms. Mar. She let the
participants write a letter of reference and make a short speech about an IELTS speaking
activity. She then shared an interesting and interactive app for learning a foreign language
called Duolingo. It served as her encouragement for the attendees to improve their
English language proficiency.
Concluding, Ms. Mar left the participants with some thoughts to ponder. She
highlighted that English is a tool. It is an invaluable tool for communication. Therefore,
we must make every effort on enhancing our skills in expressing ourselves through the
use of the English language. She also added that learning the English language does not
equate with having a colonial mentality.

C. Resource Speaker 2: Mrs. Lalaine L. Mañosca

Gusto. Kaya. Pwede. These were the opening words by Mrs. Lalaine L. Mañosca
that clearly gives an overview of her talk. She emphasized the fact that every teacher has
his/her own technique to be used in school as long as it satisfies the three words. Her
presentation was filled of specific and engaging teaching techniques that are student-
centered. As she explained each one and how it is to be utilized in the classroom, she also
applied the technique during the event. The participants were held captivated by Mrs.
Mañosca’s lecture.
She prepared some games which are to be used as a motivation during a lesson in
the classroom. One of which is “Bahay, Tao, Bagyo”. Everyone in the conference hall
participated in this enjoyable game and they definitely had a great time. Another one is a
short story telling activity. As the lecturer tells a story, the participants made some hand
gestures that tickles the person in front of you.
The session ended with some inspiring pictures showing Mrs. Mañosca
experience in a classroom setting. She then reiterated her opening three words: Gusto,
Kaya, Pwede and left some enlightening thoughts for the participants to ponder on.

D. Open Forum
A brief open forum session followed Mrs. Lalaine L. Mañosca’s lecture. Both of
the resource speakers were called in front to respond to the audience’s queries. A student
from BSED – 1A raised a question about the possible negative effect of positive
reinforcement. Ms. Felina Gail Mar replied that positive reinforcement highlights the
good attitude of the students and because of that, they will be more encouraged to learn
the lesson.
Another question was raised from BSED – 1B for both of the speakers about
specific tips on how to improve their English proficiency. Mrs. Mañosca advised the
students to constantly use the language as often as possible and Ms. Mar concurred. The
open forum ended with another question from BSED – 1A about further information
about the Direct Method in which Ms. Mar explained.
