MONEY OVER PASSION?

WEEKLY BLOG 8

FILMING

What practical work have you done These past two weeks me and Ben have been out on filming
this week - and how helpful was your both interviews with Steve Brian on Friday 26 th April, Tyriq
earlier planning? Hamilton on Tuesday 30th April and finally Ian Davenport on the
Friday 10th May, we have also gained b-role footage for all
these interviews. We have also filmed within these two weeks
our narration for our short expository music documentary
(Money Over Passion?). Me and Ben both took up our planned
roles during the filming process due too it being a two camera
set up you had I (camera man 1) and Ben (Camera man 2). We
conveyed before hand who would shoot the interview from
what angle I was the front camera whilst Ben shot from a side
angle of the interviewee. This was effective as by organising this
beforehand as it allowed us to get the interview done in order
for the interviewee’s to continue with their work.

Friday 26th April

On this day I and Ben travelled to Thatcham, Greenham to film
an interview with Underdog’s drummer Steve Brian. Planning
allowed us this day to have an exact location as the
address/postcode of this location was written within our
production schedule and furthermore our interviewee details
which stated name, phone number and address of filming. The
story board was essential at this location as it allowed us to gain
a strong understanding of what we needed to film and how we
wanted this look such as which side of the shot we decided to
have Steve on as stated in these beneficial story telling
documents, from this we gained a great understanding of what
shots and angles were needed. For example this was a two
camera set up. I and Ben had the equipment ready too go as
we communicated politely to each other before and to look in
the equipment list as we needed led lights at this location due
to it being a dark room with no windows.

How will this be useful to you as your The reason our planning will be incredibly important later on
production process continues during editing is because this will allow me when editing to refer
back to beneficial planning documents such as our detailed
storyboards in order to plan out strategically how we wish our
production to look on screen as a final product, our editing will
be done individually but with a high amount of communication
to ensure each other has a very strong understanding of our
short expository documentary Money Over Passion. Another
planning document that will be very useful during this editing
process is our script which will allow me and Ben to set this out
prior to footage as this makes the process much more effective
and all together flow well. This is because the script correlates
with the story board. This is because your script allows you too
know where the narration needs to be organisation wise whilst

the storyboard conveys effectively what footage needs to go

above this narration to compose the atmosphere as desired.

Upload behind the scenes pictures

and videos and comment on what
they show

This image above shows us with Steve Brian in his studio getting
ready to film b-role of him playing the drums. This was a great set
up that allowed us to use objects around the room to position
our camera on to gain great shots that had a large variety of
interesting angles and shots. Me and Ben always ensured during
catching b-role not to enter each others shots, this was
successful and we conveyed this to each other politely, calmly
with a great understanding of each others intentions.

This photo above shows Ben strategically carrying out his role as
lighting technician enthusiastically and ensuring that the lighting
is balanced within the shot and furthermore that this won’t
interfere with the interviewee’s eye sight. Ben had a great
understanding of the lighting equipment and this was carried
out successfully with the use of team work as I would frequently
refer back to camera one where the Comica lite microphone
was attached to ensure that the lighting did not interfere with
the shot e.g. reflections or over/under exposed area’s which
may cause shadow. We used a high amount of communication
here to ensure we gained a great end product.

What issues did you encounter whilst The biggest issues we had when filming were the following
out filming and how did you available space within where we were interviewing Tyriq and
overcome them? recording narration. This is because there was limited space
within this room which caused the interview once reviewed
back to not convey our subject which is music. This was an issue
that viewers may not notice but we will and may cause us too
loose marks due to this following the codes and conventions of
a documentary interview. This also means that it won’t be able
to be used as a frequent interview as will not portray our
productions atmosphere which is what we want. We were
unable to fix this due to only having an hour within this room as it
was booked out three days prior to the shoot. Furthermore Tyriq
had limited available time (every Tuesday) which meant we
only had another week to gain this before editing. We will try our
best to ensure we will gain this interview again to benefit our
productions mise-en-scene for our viewer’s visual experience.

How suitable do you feel your I personally feel whist most locations were suitable for our
MONEY OVER PASSION? WEEKLY BLOG 8

locations were for your filming? production (Money Over Passion?), I personally believe that
others were not bad but have not conveyed our topic of music
the way that I had hoped. An example of this is when filming
Tyriq’s interview. This room was small and lacked space, this
mean that we unfortunately could not get the microphones and
mixing board within the shot, which caused us to not have the
atmosphere as hoped for within the production. We will plan on
re-recording this interview if Tyriq has availability and furthermore
if we can gain this room again as it would heavily benefit our
production, as this allows viewers to gain a better understanding
of the interviewee. I personally believe our other two locations
which were both music studios, were very interesting to see as I
am very into music. I personally believe Steve’s studio was great
to film in as he had a professional ocean blue drumkit which
came out great on camera. This room had a high amount of
available plug sockets due to it being a music studio so
therefore we had wide range of choices to plug the lights into
which allowed us too have much more creative freedom
allowing Ben as lighting was his role to experiment with these in
order to find our best option of lighting. Overall this location was
a success and has benefited our productions reliability well.

How have you made use of the Me and Ben as a team ensured that everything was set-up
technical skills you have developed when travelling to locations such as Steve Brian’s house in order
so far this year? to gain access to his bands studio and also Ian Davenport’s
music studio in Oxford. We both used past knowledge in order
to develop our understanding and furthermore our technical
skills of using professional grade equipment. An example of this is
at Steve Brian’s music studio where Ben developed his
knowledge of led lights as learnt in the documentary unit back
in September. This was Ben’s role and he executed it excellently
by ensuring that these lights were lit to an appropriate amount
of light that did not interfere with the interviewee’s sight or
furthermore the shot. We used team work here as I ensured that
this did not interfere with the shot. We used a high level of
communication when doing this as I would convey to Ben
politely if this was causing any reflections and furthermore if any
areas were over exposed that would interfere during the editing
process. This use of communication allowed me and Ben to
develop our communication skills as a team and furthermore
Ben’s knowledge of lighting within shots and my knowledge of
setting up camera shots, this was very successful and had a
fantastic end product. I also used past knowledge from
recording our radio drama’s in Unit 5. This is because I was the
sound specialist, which was my designated role assigned within
the proposal and furthermore developed within the planning
stages with Ben. My job was to ensure that no unwanted noise
was captured that interfered with what the interviewee was
conveying as this would be difficult to re-record due to
availability of interviewee’s. This was done successfully as me
and Ben as a team would test this twice before the interview

ourselves and once with the interviewee just before shooting in

order for us not to have to use our contingency plan as this
would put us behind schedule. Ben would speak from the
distance the interviewee would be talking from and I would
record this of which then we would review this back to ensure
we did not take up too much time of the interviewee, this was
beneficial and successful for me and Ben as it resulted with a
great interview that when edited will benefit our production
massively.

Having reviewed your footage, are I am currently incredibly happy with all footage that has been
you happy with what you have taken as I feel me and Ben as a composed team have
captured and does anything need managed to make use of these fantastic locations that we
reshooting? would never get the chance too see in any other occupation. I
personally believe that if the availability of Tyriq is an possibility
this interview should be re-done quickly and effectively. This is
because whilst Tyriq’s interview abided with the conventions of
an interview for example rule of thirds. The room we filmed in
was tiny which meant we had limited space to be creative.
Furthermore this location was a radio booth which was great for
displaying Tyriq’s role as a rapper within the music industry as it
was a recording booth. Due to the small amount of space we
were unable to get Tyriq and the microphone within the shot
causing the interview too not convey Tyriq’s relation to the
subject which was incredibly unfortunate. Me and Ben were
calm and composed about this and told each other whilst we
may have not gained a great interview, what Tyriq said was
great he came off as massively passionate about what he does,
furthermore as trustworthy and a good guy, which is what
persuades viewers to believe in our point. We will try our best too
make this re-shoot become a reality, by checking Tyriq’s
availability for the following Tuesday.

Are you ready to edit? If not, how far I am currently all on track and ready to edit as me and Ben as a
behind are you? team have managed to gain a high amount of quality footage
which will be used appropriately during the editing stage to
ensure that our short expository documentary, which Is being
edited individually due to the unit 8 rules and regulations of
group work which is 100% understandable and not a issue.

What work do you need to complete I currently need to complete weekly blogs 6-9 as I have fallen
outside of lessons to stay on track? behind on these, which is 100% my own fault and I take full
responsibility, these are being done during any free time at
home as well as college to ensure that this does not interfere
with any other outstanding work. I will improve upon this in the
future by pushing myself much further when it comes to these as
I personally believe that with weekly blogs by unfortunately
forgetting about these affects you, as when you return too these
you often can’t’ remember to a full extent what you did and
how therefore you spend a longer amount of time which could
be spent doing other work. I will ensure too improve this in the

future for my own well-being.
