Physical Education: A Want or a Necessity

Physical education is a topic that is provided in most public schools, but now some are

rethinking if we actually need it in the education system. Although, I believe that all students

should have the ability to have it as a class they believe that it does not help kids prepare for the

future after high school which is wrong because there are so many benefits to having one.

Physical education gives students the opportunity to exercise and workout while at

school. This is positive because most students want the ability to work out at home but are too

busy with homework or other extracurricular activities going on in their daily life. While some

students don't even attempt to work out and sit on their beds and stay on their phones. This gives

students regardless if they want to or not the ability to work out and start a healthier lifestyle. It

also helps students with skills needed later on in life after you graduate. These skills include

team building, communication, and getting to know how to socialize more. these skills you can

gain will help you and job interviews on top of that it helps you currently in the classroom by

improving academic focus. Physical education also gives you a break from all of your other hard

classes you have to deal with during the day which can be very stressful. Stress in high school

especially can be very tough because if you do not treat can lead to increased anxiety and

depression.

These other schools without physical education or are trying to get rid of it do not

believe that it can help students after high school life. A study back in 2014 showed that less

than six percent of high schools actually have a PE course now. Since it was back in 2014 that

percentage might have lowered even more!. These skill with indeed help you with your

education and for what you will need after you graduate. From Deb Voge, a retired Education

coach “Everybody keeps saying that we have a obesity problem, but the fact is we have a

physical activity problem, which leads to obesity” which is completely true.

My solution is to increase physical education classes to students and maybe add just a

health course that you should be required to take to graduate. This would benefit not only that

student but their parents, community, and the school as a whole. This might encourage students

to join team sports for that school or maybe even outside of school, either way this would, be a

great turn around for teenagers and their health.
