“By 2016, we will have our first batch of senior high school, or Grade
11… That’s the batch entering first year high school in June. By March 2018, we
will have our first graduates of the two additional years in senior high school,”
Elena Ruiz said.
As soon as the Department of Education announced last 2012 that there
will be a K-12 Curriculum, students agitatedly think about what strand they are
going to select. But choosing on what strand you are going to take is not that
easy. You have to weigh things first and consider other factors that may affect
your decision. Students should ask themselves this question: What do I want to
do after high school graduation? SHS is supposed to help lead students toward
a career path and not to mislead and confuse them.
Kristin Hans V. Santos of Bocaue, Bulacan province, pre-enrolled in ABM
at Manila Central University in Caloocan City because she wants to be “a
successful businesswoman someday.” She believes “the world changes because
of the business people who manipulates it.”
ABM is the short term for Accountancy, Business and Management. ABM
strand is under the Academic Track of K-12 Program. This is perfect for those
inclined in Mathematics and to those people who wants to enter the world of
business. Accountancy is the profession or practice of accounting. Also
measurement, processing, and communication of financial information about
economic entities. Business is an organization or enterprising entity engaged in
commercial industrial or professional. Management is the coordination of the
activities of a business in order to achieve desired objects.
Related Literature

This chapter reports the findings of a thorough study to establish the

factors that have led the students of choosing ABM as their way to their
desired strand, likewise, the significance of this related literature and studies that
are relevant to the research. An in-depth search done by the researchers. This
will also present the synthesis of the art, theoretical and conceptual framework
to fully understand the research to be done and lastly the definition of terms for
better comprehension of the study.
Gubalane (2016) asserted that there are two main factors to consider
when choosing your Senior High School Track and Strand in the k to 12
Program: (1) college plans; if you are planning to proceed to college after Senior
High School, what possible course are you planning to take? He stated that, “If
you can have the answer to these questions, then it will be easier to choose
among the different tracks and strands.”; (2) availability; not all tracks and
strands will be offered by schools in your area. “You should check the available
options first. Try to inquire too if the schools are well equipped.”, he proclaimed.
Some colleges are also offering Senior High School. These are mostly private
colleges but you can use DepEd’s voucher program to get discounts.
Accordingly, Pedragoza (2016) stated that as an ABM student, she enjoy
every moment she have. “Of course sometimes it gets hard and I know even
you experiencing hard times right? But if you love your course, the hard times
doesn't matter that much just think for the positive outcome. For me ABM is life
because besides of having classmates that is crazy us me, subjects you can
like, and having good teachers, ABM also give you the good future or jobs after
you graduate under this strand. ABM is a strand which a student choose
because they want to become a successful accountant or to become a
successful businesswoman or man.”
As quoted by Pedragoza (2016), the factors in choosing ABM as your strand
are; (a) you are willing to have a business someday. It is because in this strand,
you are going to study how to have a business, entrepreneurship, what are the
characteristics does a business man/woman have? (b) Inclined with the subject
Mathematics. But not all because some student says "If this is your weakness,
you should give more focus here." Most of the students choose this strand
because they are good in Math which makes it easier for them. (c) A heart that
loves what he/she do as an ABM student. You cannot achieve your goal if you
don't love your course. If you love everything about ABM, you can give your full
effort and attention just to achieve your dreams.

Related Studies

According to Republic Act. No. 10533 Section 2, Declaration of Policy. — The

State shall establish, maintain and support a complete, adequate, and integrated
system of education relevant to the needs of the people, the country and society-at-
large. Likewise, it is hereby declared the policy of the State that every graduate
of basic education shall be an empowered individual who has learned, through a
program that is rooted on sound educational principles and geared towards
excellence, the foundations for learning throughout life, the competence to
engage in work and be productive, the ability to coexist in fruitful harmony with
local and global communities, the capability to engage in autonomous, creative,
and critical thinking, and the capacity and willingness to transform others and
one’s self.

Section 4, students must enhance basic education program encompasses at

least 1 year of kindergarten education, 6 years of elementary education, 6 years
of secondary education, in that sequence. It includes 4 years of junior high
school education and 2 years of senior high school education.

The review has therefore proved that each and every literature and
studies stated in this research is similar on the present study. There are different
factors that affects the decision-making of students in choosing ABM strand as
their manifestation such as; college plans, availability, skills, motivation,
dedication, and desire. Under the circumstances, the information and data
gathered in the related literature and studies contributed and helped the students
to decide, and convinced them on what strand they are up to, especially in ABM.
This also served as the guidelines on what path you are going. Hence, it made
the study better to comprehend and understand.
On the other hand, with the help of the people behind the eagerness to provide
the basic education and planning, their works became the basis of the study also, as
well as the respondents. Pedragoza, Gubalane, and the constitution provide the
means that made the researchers outlook and seek for more concrete and
definite details and answers.

Research Questions

The study focused on the factors in choosing Accountancy, Business and

Management strand of the students who were studying in Paliparan III Senior High
School for the academic year 2016-2017 in Paliparan III, Dasmariñas City of
The results and information gathered about the queries was analyzed by
the researchers and gave an in-depth and thorough study that helped them in
inquiring the factors in choosing Accountancy, Business and Management
strand of the Paliparan III Senior High School students.
The research questions that will be answer:
1. What are the factors in choosing Accountancy, Business and
2. What are the characteristics of Accountancy, Business and Management
that made you chose it?
3. What are the possible contribution of Accountancy, Business and
Management for those students who took this strand?

Scope and Delimitation

The study covers the factors in choosing ABM stand at Paliparan III
Senior High School. The study is limited only to the students who are currently
enrolled and taking up the Accountancy, Business and Management strand in
the academic year 2016-2017 were involved. The study surveys and overviews
the different factors that influences the students in choosing their desired strand.
The student’s responses were determined after handling them out the
questionnaire that they need to fill-up and answer. The researchers guidelines
helped them through gathering the information coming from the respondents from
December 2016 up until March 2017.

Significance of the Study

The researchers foresee that by discerning the factors in choosing

Accountancy, Business and Management Strand at Paliparan III Senior High
School, the study would be able to come up with discernments that will lead the
students into more appraisable decision-making that could be utilized as
reference for the future leaders.
Students. The results of this study greatly helps the students to cease all
their doubts and confusion on what strand to be taken of. They also need to
consider their future job, interests, skills and other factor that may help them in
choosing the strand they want. Being sure about the strand that will best suit to
them is really the significance of this study.
Parents. They could help and guide their children on how to make a good
decision in terms of choosing what they want, besides they are also considered
as one of the factors of their children’s settlement. They are responsible in
supporting their children financially to finish their study. Moreover, becoming a
successful ABM student is just a way of showing your gratitude for all the
sacrifices they did.
Companies. Through this study, they will think of much approachable offer
to persuade the young successors to be their future employees and developers,
and provide each individual’s inspiration to work to their company. Furthermore,
being capable of making the company successful. Hence, the more student that
are literate about ABM strand the more employees will apply.
Society, Community, Teachers. With the help of these team, the future
leaders needs a motivation pursue their dream, a literate society that will support
them in coping the bad situations and decisions. Through them, they can teach
the young ones a different techniques, also there could be a lot of job
opportunities that may cause the growth of the economy.
Future Researchers.
Definition of Terms
For better comprehension and in-depth understanding of this study, the
following terms are defined operationally:
Accountancy. It is the profession or practice of accounting. Also
measurement, processing, and communication of financial information about
economic entities, such as businesses and corporations.

Accountancy, Business and Management (ABM). This is under the

Academic Track of K-12 Program. This is perfect for those inclined in
Mathematics and to those people who wants to enter the world of business.

Business. It is an organizational entity involved in the provision of goods

and services to consumers. Businesses as a form of economic activity are
prevalent in capitalist economies, where most of them are privately owned and
provide goods and services to customers in exchange for other goods, services,
or money.

K to 12 Program. It covers Kindergarten and 12 years of basic education

(six years of primary education, four years of Junior High School, and two years
of Senior High School [SHS]) to provide sufficient time for mastery of concepts
and skills, develop lifelong learners, and prepare graduates for tertiary education,
middle-level skills development, employment, and entrepreneurship.

Management. It refers to the administration of an organization, whether it

be a business, a not-for-profit organization, or government body. Management
includes the activities of setting the strategy of an organization and coordinating
the efforts of its employees or volunteers to accomplish its objectives through
the application of available resources, such as financial, natural, technological,
and human resources.
