Empathy Essay

According to psychology, people aren't capable of feeling the intensity of someone else's
pain or suffering to be able to give empathy. The weight of pain and suffering are always different
to every person. We may suffer to the same circumstance, but we can never really say that we
understand his or her suffering completely. Life has always been a roller coaster. It's full of ups
and downs, but we would always have people around us to help in every step of the way and you'll
find yourself getting stuck in this cycle. You will find people that will go through everything with
you and you will find yourself wanting to help that person at the same time. You wish to be able
to help in every way you can. This is how I understand empathy. Helping other people when you
know that you have limits of understanding their emotions brought by their sufferings. We rely on
how vaguely we see through them and really just extending your hands when they need one.

When Beatrice Webb first showed empathy to people it brought change into our society.
She was a daughter born after a silver spoon from her affluent family and was living a life respected
in the society. But she chose to become the first person to influence and create a trend to social
reformers such as Jack London and George Orwell to immerse themselves to the poor. She started
out this socialist movement to really understand what it’s like to live in poverty. She immersed
herself to the other world existing beyond what the rich would only see – poverty is caused by a
failure of character, a moral flaw. Which made Beatrice rethink her political beliefs and the beliefs
of other people in power during that time. Empathy has always been long existent in our society.
And it brought so much reform since then on. Imagine living in a world where the leaders don’t
empathize with their people, where religion is thought without empathy, and families governed
out of rules and not empathy. Life could’ve been so different without empathy.
I first experienced empathy from my parents. They treated me with empathy every time I
go through hardships and failures. It’s every child’s happiness for their views and feelings to be
acknowledged by their parents when they do something out of the norm. And my parents never
failed in doing so. Because of that, I learned empathy and I owe my parents for showing and
teaching how to treat people around me. Secondly, I experience empathy from my friends.
Everytime I go through the deepest downfall I can ever have; my friends are always there. They
would comfort and help me in every way they can, for that I’m really grateful. Lastly, I always
experience empathy from God. I’m not perfect and I commit sins. Imagine if God wouldn’t
empathize for us and he would just exact justice to everyone. I could’ve already been long gone
and worthless. But He still enables me even though I have been a prodigal.

When I learned about this from English 2, It made me realize how twisted this world can
be without empathy. We live in a world where we are forced to compromise and understand each
other’s individuality. We all have our own identity and experiences, but empathy connects us all.
It is a powerful word that links humanity to each other. Which grants us the capability to be morally
correct or ethical towards our differences. Empathy is very powerful that it can start a revolution
and unify a cause in every person’s heart, and when gone, it can also harness danger to society.
