PROCEDURE FOR CHANGING OVER MAIN AIR

BOTTLES IN CASE OF LOW STARTING AIR
PRESSURE DURING MANOEUVRING

 Bridge to be informed immediately.

 Change over main engine controls from bridge to engine room

 Attempt to start engine with prolonged air kick.
 If engine fails to respond:
a) Shut main air valve of bottle 1 and open main air valve of
b) bottle 2.
c) Engine movement to be given as per telegraph.
d) Stop both main air compressors.
e) Shut filling valve of bottle 1 and open filling valve of bottle 2.
f) Start both main air compressors

 Keep a careful eye on the air pressure of bottle 1, as this bottle is

now supplying air for control air / generator / auxiliaries.

 Maintain air pressure in bottle 1 between 10 ~ 12 bar by

supplementing air from bottle 2. The filling valve of bottle 1 should
be crack open / shut if the pressure in bottle 1 falls below 10 bar

 Once the vessel is in safe waters, both air bottles to be pressed up

to 25 bar and all valves reverted back to normal. Caution to be
taken to stop both the air compressors before changing over the
filling valves on the bottles.

 Note: Assuming main air bottle 1 in use and main air

bottle 2 standby
