Civics - Period 3

Why do youth choose not to vote?

oting is a huge part of civic engagement. Civic engagement is when a person

is actively involved in public/ community issues or concerns. Voting would be apart of
the engagement because it is casting ballots for who should run/ or be apart of
leadership with where you live. Some young people choose not to vote because it isn’t
apart of youths interests, and some citizens feel like their ballots/ opinions does not
matter. On the other hand, some youth may vote because it is felt like an obligation as a
citizen.
First, youth may choose not to vote because it isn’t apart of their daily life or
interests. From document it states “ Given the reality that youth tend to get most excited
about issues.....cumulative voting” This quote proves that youth does not feel like
politicians are including issues that would catch their attention or what actually involves
them which would explain why they choose not to vote. To add onto that, from
document 6 it states “I understand both the importance of being an active…”it doesn’t
affect me” syndrome” This also proves that youth feel like the issues that are being
addressed only involve the older age groups because it is all about what adults have to
deal with and not the older people which is a result of them not voting.
Next, some youth may feel like their votes does not matter. From “Exploring why
so many americans don’t vote” it states “I feel like my voice doesn’t matter”....so it
doesn’t make a difference.” This proves that youth feel like even if their opinions are
voiced it does not matter because people who don’t deserve to be in the office still is put
into office. Meaning that if they chose someone who they feel like would make a
difference isn’t apart of the office anyway there was no reason for them to vote in the
first place. From the John Green video, he stated that citizens feel like their doesn’t
matter because a state is mostly one sided, meaning that they are not fair when it
comes down to them voting and other people’s opinions which would cause them not to
vote or be actively involved with the elections.
Finally, some young people vote because they feel like it is necessary as a
citizen and it is important to be actively involved. From document three it states “political
involvement not only a privilege...duty of my generation” This quote proves that some
young people feel like if a country is giving you the right to be a citizen that you should
vote as something in return because that it is your duty as a citizen.
In conclusion, voting is a huge part of civic engagement and there are many
different opinions that voting is something you should do and some people feel
otherwise.
