    The Mes Aynak site was finally included in the Archaeological Gazetteer of Afghanistan in 1982. Between 2002 to 2004, the site was looted, though some elements of Buddhist sculptures were subsequently seized by the police forces, before being handed back to the National Museum in Kabul.

    Mes Aynak, Located at a crossroad of cultures and civilizations, Afghanistan possesses a
    unique and vast cultural heritage. Due to its geographical location and geology, the
    country also boasts an abundance of natural resources, which often go hand in hand with
    its cultural wealth. One example of this close relationship between the two can be found
    in Mes Aynak, a vast archaeological area dating back at least 2000 years, sitting on the
    world’s second largest copper deposit 40 km southwest of Kabul, in Logar Province.
