As we look to India today, the United States sees an opportunity to sell our exports in one of the fastest growing markets in the world... For America this is a jobs’ fair
Trade between our countries is not just a one-way street of American jobs and companies moving to India. It is a dynamic two-way relationship that is creating jobs, growth and higher standards in both our countries
We will never forget the awful images of 26/11. The flames from this hotel that lit up the night sky. We’ll never forget how the world, including the American people, watched and grieved with all of India...We will always remember not only the sorrow, but also the courage and humanity that was displayed that day

Mumbai: In the spirit of give and take, US President Barack Obama on Saturday signalled the easing of export controls on dual use technology even as he announced signing of deals worth $10 billion with US companies, something he said would create 50,000 jobs back home. Hammered by plummeting approval rating and the loss of the House of Representatives to the Republicans, and under pressure to offer his Indian hosts something more tangible to chew on rather than soaring rhetoric, Obama used his meeting with the high priests and priestesses of India Inc to placate both constituencies — it was
a dual use speech, as one person present at the gathering quipped to TOI. His 20-minute special keynote address at the US-India Business and Entrepreneurship summit at The Trident was understandably peppered by references to creation of jobs both in the US and India and other key issues such as the need for a strong partnership between the two largest democracies of the world, developing the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation and the need for India to lift certain trade and investment barriers. ‘‘Even as we strengthen our national security we should make sure that un, necessary barriers don’t stand in the way of high-tech trade between our countries. We will work with India to

fundamentally reform our control on exports, which will allow greater cooperation in a range of high-tech sectors to strengthen our relation,’’ he said commenting on the issue of dual use technologies, something the Indian side has been lobbying for a while. He, however, in the same breath, asked the Indian side to reciprocate and reduce trade barriers. The easing of export rules could benefit entities like DRDO and Isro, which have been denied technologies from the US in the past. But, on the whole, it was really jobs and emphasis on partnership that dominated the US presidents speech, who is on a three-day maiden trip to India, which he himself described as his longest to any country, after taking over as the president.

Mumbai: At his first official engagement on Indian soil, President Barack Obama on Saturday told a gathering at Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, which bore the brunt of 26/11 terror, that the United States and India were bonded not just by shared ideals but also common wounds of terrorism. “By striking the places where our countries and people come together, those who perpetrated these horrific attacks hoped to drive us apart,’’ he said at an event soaked with symbolism. “But just as Indian citizens lost their lives on 9/11, American citizens lost their lives here on 26/11 — along with the citizens of many nations.’’ Obama talked about how the Indian and American people had prayed together at candlelight vigils and how both governments were now working closer than ever, “sharing intelligence, preventing more attacks, and demanding that the perpetrators be brought to justice.’’ But the US president made no mention of Pakistan, although the US has now firmly come around to the Indian position that most global terror strikes were being launched from Pakistani soil. Obama addressed a mixed audience that included Taj bosses Ratan Tata, Raymond Bixon and Krishna Kumar, Union minorities affairs minister Salman Khurshid, chief secretary J P Dange, mayor Shraddha Jadhav, US Ambassador Timothy Romer, Indian Ambassador to the US Meera Shankar, US counsel general Paul Folmsbee and survivors of the terror attack after a private meeting with 12 Taj staffers who survived and former general manager Karambir Kang who
lost his wife and two sons at the hotel. Obama began his speech with why Mumbai was chosen to start his longest official foreign jaunt. “There’s been a great deal of commentary on our decision to begin our visit here in this dynamic city, at this historic hotel. To those who have asked whether this is intended to send a message, my answer is simply, absolutely,’’ he said. “Mumbai is a symbol of the incredible energy and optimism that defines India in the 21st century,’’ he said, standing against a scenic backdrop of the Gateway of India at the Chambers terrace.

Hyderabad: The state government began evacuating people from low-lying areas and setting up relief camps in the coastal districts on Saturday as severe cyclonic storm Jal lay 700 km southeast of Nellore and threatened to cause extensive damage after landfall between Puducherry and Nellore late on Sunday evening. Over 70,000 people were evacuated from low-lying areas on Saturday and provided shelter in relief camps. “The severe cyclonic storm will affect about 8 lakh people in the districts of Nellore, Guntur, Prakasam, Krishna and Chittoor,” revenue minister Dharmana Prasada Rao told the media on Saturday evening and added that schools in these districts have been shut down until further notice. In Guntur, the district administration has declared five mandals — Bapatla, Paittalavanipalem, Karlapalem, Nizampatnam and Repalle — as highly sensitive while all the 10 mandals in Prakasam district were declared as highly vulnerable to the cyclone before and after the landfall. A similar alert is on in the other three districts. Having already intensified into a cyclonic storm, Jal is expected to trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall over south coastal AP over the next 24 hours and which is likely to spread to the Rayalaseema region too in the next 48 hours. The revenue minister said Chittoor is like-
