YEAR 8 EARRING TASK

PURPOSE
The purpose of this task is to introduce students to the design and manufacturing process and to
develop their skills in digital technologies.
Students will be introduced to creating a cut and etch file on illustrator which will then be sent to
the laser cutter.

TASK
Over several classes’ you will be working on investigating, designing and creating a pair of drop
earrings. You will need to create a folio including the following:

STATEMENT OF INTENT
The statement of intent should be a small paragraph outlining what you are going to make. Below
are some questions which you should include.

o What are you going to make? (initial goal for this project)
o Who are you going to make it for? (e.g. Mum, Sister, Aunty or market)
o What do they like?
o Do you need to match anything? (clothes, other jewelry)
o Size constraint – 50mm x 50mm

RESEARCH

o Look at three images of existing drop earring designs

o Comment on what you like/dislike
o Comment on how you could incorporate these ideas into your designs
o Comment on the material properties
o Think about the different terminology you can use to describe designs (e.g. Sharp, curved,
angular, hard, soft, detailed, grain, stands out, not clear, grain, bulky, long, thin and heavy)

DESIGN

o Create your earring designs using adobe illustrator

o All images your find must be an outline
o Consider the size constraint (50mm x 50mm)
o Consider the grain of the timber
o Create matching earrings hooks

EVALUATION (either 200 words or 2 minutes)

o How successful was your design and why? (e.g. good time management, prior skills)
o Provide evidence that your final product meets the criterial in your statement of intent.
o List three new skills you gained and how you used these throughout the project.
o Did you improve any of your skills and how?
o If you were to do this project again list three key steps you would have done differently.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

o Initial statement
o Research
o Appropriate selection of image outline
o Final illustrator file
o Final product
o Evaluation
