IOT BASED HOME SECURITY SYSTEM

Abstract — In the world of Internet of
Things(IOT) when we have all the technologies to
revolutionize our life. It is a great idea to develop
a system which can be controlled and monitored
from anywhere. There are many types of good
security system and cameras out there for home
security but they are very expensive so today we
will build a low cost simple Raspberry Pi based
Intruder Alert System, which not only alert you
through an Android application but also sends the
picture of Intruder when it detects any. In this IOT
based Project, we will build a Smart Surveillance
System using PIR Sensor and PI Camera. This
system will detect the presence of Intruder and
quickly alert the user by sending him an alert. The
RPi stores the images in Firebase Real-time
database and on the android app you can check
the captured images. This system can be installed
at the main door of your home or office and you
can monitor it from anywhere in the world using
your mobile device over internet.

I. INTRODUCTION
Internet of things (IoT) has revolutionized our life.
We can develop system that can be controlled and
monitored from anywhere. In this IoT based
project, we will build a home security system
using PIR sensor and pi camera. The system will
detect the intruder and alert the user by sending a
mail. Then user will check the app which contains
the image captured by pi camera. Raspberry Pi is
used to control the whole system. Android app
stored the captured pictures. This Android
Application communicates with Firebase Real
time database to control its state and Firebase
storage to store captured images. We can also ON
and OFF the system using Android Application.
This project is useful to protect ourselves and our
house and property as well as privacy. This system
can be installed at the main door of any home or
office.
II. LITERATURE REVIEW
As we will actualize the Security System with IoT,
one needs to locate the past framework that have
been implicit past by different analysts to enhance
the quality and components of our proposed
framework. Additionally, we need to take a
portion of the innovative audit, so we couldn't
need to confront the major issue in the
improvement of our proposed framework.

has to offer i.e. IOT which provides seamless
data communication, remote control ability
makes it easier to automate the process of
security. Automation of security can be
achieved by designing an application on
Raspberry Pi through various sensors such as
motion sensor -PIR (Passive Infrared) sensors
for detection of any intruder in the house, upon
detection an alarm is raised and the owner of

the house and law enforcements are notified

2. Development of Smart Home Security System
Using Raspberry Pi (International Research
Journal of Engineering and Technology, Vol 4,
Issue 6, June, 2017)- Home Security System is
a mobile web based application that allows the
user to monitor and control their home using
their mobile device. Proposed system requires
a micro SD card with an OS for the Raspberry
Pi. The OS Raspbian is selected for this
system which is commonly used for projects,
before copying the OS on the micro SD card
we need to copy a file named NOOBS this will
help to download the latest OS for the
Raspberry Pl as well as works as an interface
like BIOS in windows. After booting the OS,
we have installed Linux for programming. For
result BLYNK App. is used which gives
authentication code which is used in program
which connect Mobile and Raspberry Pi and
inform user about the changes in the house,
with the help of a file name such as Open or
Closed for Doors Windows and High & Low
for Gas and Water Leakage with the help of
BLYNK App we can ON/OFF home devices
like Fan, Light, Motor. The system can also be
used for various other purposes in society
offices where the security guard can have the
access in his smart phone and when he is on
his rounds if a person comes then he can allow
him to enter in his absence he can check for
water level also [2].
3. IOT based Security System using Raspberry Pi
with Email and Voice alert (International
Journals of Advanced Research in Computer
Science and Software Engineering, Vol 8,
Issue 4, April, 2018)- This paper is based on
the concepts of IOT, where in an unauthorized
or unwanted intrusion or motion is detected
using different hardware and software tools.
This paper makes the use of an Raspberry Pi 3
board. For example: If an Intruder or
unauthorized persons enter into our zone the
PIR Sensor detects the person activity then the
security system capture the image of the
unauthorized person and also give real time
alert SMS to the authorized person After the
real time SMS alert the security system gives
the buzzer sound. The image will be captured
using Pi Camera which is attached to the
Raspberry Pi. The captured image will be sent
to the authorized person via g-mail by the
usage of inbuilt WIFI module in the Raspberry
Pi board. The real time alert SMS is sent using
the WAY2SMSwhich is connected through the
internet. After completion of all these
activities the buzzer will be activated and also
sends voice messages through loud speaker
[3].
4. Smart Intrusion alert System using Raspberry
Pi and PIR sensor (National Conference on
Sustainable Energy `17,Vol 1, Issue 1,May,
2017)- This paper deals with the design and
implementation of Smart Intrusion Alert
System for home and office security using
open source hardware platform. The model use
Raspberry pi 3 (model B), Passive infrared
(PIR) sensor and Raspberry pi camera
integrated with smartphone. It use home Wi-Fi
to integrate with web server for notifying via
Telegram application. Raspberry pi operates
and controls motion detector and camera for
remote sensing, capture any motion image and
send the alert to the user via Telegram
application. For instance, when motion is
detected by PIR sensor, the Raspberry Pi
camera automatically capture image and the
Raspberry pi device alerts the owner regarding
the possible intrusion. The result seems satisfy,
the PIR sensor detect any motion well and
with a several seconds it sends an alert to
Telegram application. Selected indoor and
outdoor locations are tested and it seems that it
works well for both. This research is
significant and benefits for recent technology
of home or office security [4].
5. Raspberry PI based Security System on IOT

IV. RESULTS AND DISCUSSIONS

The range of PIR Sensor is about 20 feet. It means

that it can detect motion in the environment up to a
distance of 20 feet. The PIR Sensor works in only
direction. It is very sensitive and detects even the
slightest changes. The Pi Camera used is of 5-
megapixels. The camera quality can be changed
according to user requirement. The camera clicks
the image 10 seconds after the motion is detected
and sends an alert mail along with the photos
captured by the camera to the mail address provided
to the system as well as to the application in the
mobile phone of the user. We can also add multiple
emails. The app is secured with a finger print
scanner which makes it more safe and reliable. Also
there is a delete option that helps to remove
unwanted images captured by the camera.

B. PIR Motion Sensor:

Infrared radiation is electromagnetic radiation
(EMR) with longer wavelengths than those of
visible light, and is therefore invisible to the
human eye. It is sometimes called infrared light.
It extends from the nominal red edge of the
visible spectrum at 700 nanometers (frequency

VI. LIMITATIONS
There are some limitations like range of Pi camera
and PIR sensor. Sometimes PIR sensor may detect
some intruder who pass from the corridor. It may
detect the movement of leaves of trees.
VII. FUTURE SCOPE
In future version of this project we can add the
mail address of nearby Police station so the image
will send to Police also. We can record the video
instead of capturing images and send it to Police
and alert the user by voice message. The location
of respected house can also be shared with the
nearby Police Station. Face recognition can also
be added as an additional feature to avoid
capturing of unwanted images.
VIII. CONCLUSION
The aim of the project is to prevent the access to
any unknown person entering the House and to
protect your house as well as your privacy. This
project will send the mail to user and stored the
captured images of intruder. This system very
useful for protecting your life and property.

APPENDIX
This project not only gave us an experience and
knowledge about various electronic components,
sensors, modules and hardware but also made us
understand a sense of teamwork, mutual assistance
and leadership among ourselves which will always
