July, 2019 —- Celebrating 116 Years of Faithful Service — 1903 - 2019

Officers From the Grand Knight’s Desk
Chaplain “Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in” - Michael Corleone
S/K Fr. William Winters,
OFM, Cap. My Brothers and Sisters in Columbianism,

I am humbled and honored to be privileged to once again serve this Council as Grand Knight.
Grand Knight As Bob Dyan said way back when, the times they are a-changin'. It was true then, and it’s true

now. Not only in our Country and our Society, but in our Order as well. And transitioning to that
change is not easy. My challenge this year will be to help our Council move forward, with a
wonderful group of Officers, and seize all of the opportunities that Supreme has presented to us
Deputy Grand Knight
S/K James Kaan
through their new “Faith in Action” programs. Faith in Action, as I see it, is designed to do two
things. The first is providing the Councils with ways to carry out our main objective of Charity,
Chancellor and the second is allowing us to serve our Churches by moving us closer into the heart of our

Financial Secretary
S/K Robert Elliott PGK FDD Our Council has always been very active in our works of Charity, there is no denying that.
However, as is the case with most Councils that own their own building, we are very
independent and sometimes not quite as involved in our parishes as we should be, and not quite

as prayerful or spiritual as we could be. Like I always say, put out a call to some Brother Knights

tools then you will find at Home Depot. But tell them to come to the Church on a weeknight to
Recorder pray for that widow, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a dozen. As we know, Charity was the
S/K Joe Fontana motive that gave rise to chivalry, and it comes from a kind heart.
Advocate We are men of Charity, and of Faith, of that there is no doubt. And we are also men of

Action. This year we will put all those things together and, as always, lead the way and be the
Inside Guard Knights of Columbus that Fr. McGivney envisioned. So I will ask that you all pay close attention

to the things that we will be doing this year, look at how and where you can help, and do not

With these new programs comes another opportunity. An Opportunity to recruit new
First Year Trustee Members. If our Council is going to be successful, if we are going to have a larger presence in
S/K Pat Molluso our parishes, we will need to continue to grow within those parishes. It is my belief that when
Second Year Trustee people see us doing things in the Church, they are far more likely to want to become a part of

side and encourage them to want to join us. We need to be the reason that a man wants to join. We need to be the example of what a
Catholic Gentleman is. I strongly encourage those of you that attend your different Masses to wear your K of C Polo shirts to Mass. Sit
together at Mass as a group. Participate in the Mass. Become an Usher, a Lector or an E. M.. Become a force for good in your Church,
and let people know that you are a Knight and that you do these things because as a Knight it is what you are called to do. We will be
holding Membership Drives in our parishes throughout the year. When you hear that there will be one at your Church, it is your duty
to be there and help out. But Church isn’t the only place we can recruit members. Ask a friend at work, ask a neighbor, ask a cousin or
a nephew. It’s ok if they aren’t the examples of Christ that they should be, neither are we. Consider it an opportunity for him to return
to the Church, to get involved in something that will bring goodness into his life.

I want to thank you all in advance for your cooperation in this upcoming year. I look forward to working with all of my Brother
Knights, and with Madame President Betty Weeks and the Patchogue Columbiettes. Our Columbiettes have always had such a strong
presence in our Council. I know that only through hard work, and our shared devotion to Our Blessed Mother, can we fulfill the vision
of Monsignor J. Francis McIntyre of promoting the ideals of Columbianism together.

Did you Know?
"Each fold of the Flag has a Special Meaning‖
By: SK James Ryan, Family Director

July 4th, Our Nation’s Independence Day and celebration of freedom and our Flag. The United States flag
when folded during a ceremony has 13 folds. Each fold holds great significance.

1. The first fold of our flag is a symbol of life.

2. The second fold signifies our belief in eternal life.
3. The third is made in honor and tribute of the veteran departing our ranks, and who gave a portion of his or
her life for the defense of our country to attain peace.
4. The fourth fold exemplifies our weaker nature as citizens trusting in God; it is to Him we turn for His divine
5. The fifth is an acknowledgement to our country, in dealing with other countries, may she always be right, but
it is our country, right or wrong.
6. The sixth fold is for where our hearts lie. We pledge allegiance to the USA and to the republic for which it
stands, our nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
7. The seventh is a tribute to our armed forces.
8. The eighth is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death.
9. The ninth fold is an honor to womanhood, for it has been through their faith, love, loyalty, and devotion that
the character of the men and women who made this country great have been molded.
10. The 10th is a tribute to father, for he too, has given his sons and daughters for the defense of our country.
11. The 11th fold, represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon and glorifies the
God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
12. The 12th represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies God the Father, the Son and Holy Ghost.
13. The 13th and last fold, when the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost, reminding us of our
national motto, ―In God We Trust.‖
