Teaching experience at SD Kartika II-3 Palembang

By Riska Bella (06121001004)

One of the courses that I took at 7th Semester is EYL which requires us to be a
competent teacher for elementary school children. Application of this course was conducted
in SD Kartika II-3 Palembang. Here we were divided into 9 teaching groups that consists of
5 people per group. I, were in the fifth group consisting of intifadhah, Vina Trisdayanti,
Monde Yuni Maharani, salama and myself Riska Bella. We get the chance to teach in 1B and
4B class , each of class consist of 30 students. to teache the practice of primary school is a
new experience for me and colleagues. On this occasion, I and they were teaching English for
about a month with a variety of topics being taught. Get a chance to have teaching practice in
this class has given me a unique teaching experience slightly different with teaching
experience that I got earlier. Indeed, this is the first time I taught children aged 5-10 years to
learn together in a formal school. Although I haven’t know yet how the characteristics of the
students, I try to prepare best the lesson plan s o that they understand and happy when
learning.

The first meeting I started on October 28, which is in a class 4B. At this first meeting we
have an introduction to the student followed by recapitulate the lessons they have learned.
During taught from October 28 until ending on December 2, 2015 we use a variety of media
to teach, among others: origami paper, pictures, songs, and games to make them more
interested in the subject and the result was as we expected. For learning tools such as lesson
plans and media we had prepare the material together with members of our group, this is
where teamwork and cooperation so thick I feel.
During the learning process takes place I get some notes about behavior of children in
learning.

● Children class 1 very difficult to be invited to focus on the lesson, their attention is
often fooled by simple things.
● Children are the first class at the beginning of the meeting was very shy but after
some time we walked into their classroom getting used even some children who
started unruly.
● Children class 1 in the study must be guided one by one because most of them are
rather difficult to fully understand the material being taught.
● To participate in the class, the children grade 1 must be designated in advance (at the
beginning of the meeting) was about to move forward class or answer questions given
.
● Reward simple form of origami paper is very loved by children grade 1 but for grade
4 we have to be more creative so that they are attracted by the rewards given, in this
case we made a star, bookmarks, as well as sitting as a reward and their response was
very either.
● There was one kid in class 1 that require more attention, according to information
from the teacher the child is a little slow to absorb the lessons because of her age still
are too young so that each meeting one member of our group took turns to accompany
the child to learn.
● the first grade student was accompanied by the their parents.
● Students class 1 & 4 love and out of class without permission (perhaps because we
were new here), this is where we slipped culture permission to the teacher when going
out of the classroom.
● students of 4th grade really like issuing their toys when learned. To overcome this we
make a rule in the form of penalties to sing in English if they pull out the toys in the
classroom. This penalty also managed to make them not put the toy again.
● Graders 4 at the beginning of the meeting were very enthusiastic when she found out
we were going to teach them untu the months ahead
● in terms of learning, graders 4 more active than those with a grade 1
● Child ren in both classes really like games and songs are inserted during the study.
● Note important to us that children in both classes we teach are very competitive with
each other, they are scrambling to get a reward or good grades.
● In addition, children in both the class were given a task to be valued in place by the
teacher (not taken to task)

By studying their patterns of behavior I conclude that the first, children are very fond of
games and songs are used as a medium of learning. Second, children age, they are still very
fond reward for their achievement, and the last teacher should be able to gather and care of
them so, they can focus on learning because they quickly dispersed concentration while
studying.
