Lesson Idea Name: Living vs. Non-living

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): Kindergarten

Content Standard Addressed: SKL1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about how
organisms (alive and not alive) and non-living objects are grouped.

a) Construct an explanation based on observations to recognize the differences between

organisms and nonliving objects.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3 – Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool: Popplet

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): Popplet supports different learners by:
• Allowing students to have a premade pre-made template to organize their material in.
• Visual learners have easy access to place their thoughts on the page.
• This website and app can be accessed from school, home, or anywhere a device is located.
• Students have the opportunity to collaborate with classmates or other classes.
Lesson idea implementation:
The teacher will introduce this lesson by asking the students hold up their pencils and asking “do you think
your pencil is living or non-living.” Then the teacher will call on a few different students to hear their answers.
After the students are done with the discussion, the teacher will open the Popplet and zoom into each
characteristic. The teacher will then explain what makes up living and non-living things. The teacher will then
play the two different videos and ask the students to raise their hands and tell one characteristic that they
learned. The teacher will allow the students to talk with their tables about different living and non-living
things.
The teacher will then group the students into groups of two to three. The teacher will explain to the
students that they have to pick either one living or one non-living thing and include three bubbles that
includes one picture on the Popplet. The teacher will continue to display the Popplet on the interactive board
for the students to look at. When the students have completed their Popplet, the teacher will individually
display each groups Popplet and allow the students to tell what they put down if they want. The students will
then go outside with the teacher and collect/look at things outside to determine if they are living and non-
living.

Reflective Practice:
I believe that this activity will be very engaging for a kindergarten class. Popplet will give all of the students a
way to organize their thoughts in a fun and easy way! In order to extend this lesson, I would have the
students go home and collect different things or print/draw pictures of living and non-living things. The class
could then paste their findings to a poster. I would take a picture of the class poster and post it to the class
website for the parents to see.
