Journal Reflection 3
After observing Greg teach the lesson on “Running Dictation”, Jaylen and I tried teaching
the lesson to a first grade class. It was a lot harder than I expected. The rules of the game were
quite complicated, and it was hard for me to remember every rule on the spot while also
explaining the directions simply and clearly to the students. It was also difficult because it was a
class of very quiet first graders. Since the students were first graders, they had a slightly lower
level of English skills. And because the students were very quiet it was hard to tell if they
weren’t understanding or if they were just shy. It was hard to keep high energy when the students
Also, I feel like I explained the rules simply with few filler words, however, Greg pointed
out that I should use more demonstration and hand gestures. This made me realize how important
body language is in communication and can help the students understand if they may be
confused with the verbal communication. Big motions and demonstrations are helpful in getting
the students’ attention and help the students in their understanding. Greg also pointed out that
where I am standing in the classroom is also a big factor. At the beginning of class I was off to
the side, but being in the center of the classroom is important in getting the students’ attention.
Overall, I was a bit nervous to teach this lesson because of the complicated directions
involved with the “running dictation” game. And since the students were quiet, it made me more
nervous because I was getting little reaction from them. Next class, I will prepare more making
sure to hit all of the rules and work on body language and also where I am standing in the class. I
have learned that although I may prefer a more outgoing group of students, as a teacher, you
must be prepared for all types of students and be able to adapt to their reactions.
