Activity 3 10 Minutes

Work your way through the following paragraphs and insert the most appropriate words
to fill in the missing blanks. There are 10 in total.

Water may be classified as a non-energy providing (1) because we need it in such (2) quantities – but
sometimes it’s placed in its own category because of the fact that it’s a (3) substance, unlike the other
nutrients.

More than half our body is made up of water, but we lose large amounts through (4), (5), and
evaporation. Thus, if our water intake is not consistent throughout the day, this may lead to (6).

Water can be found in almost any (7). Contrary to what many people think, soda and (8) aren’t actually
all that dehydrating – compared to the amount of fluid they contain, their (9) effect is minimal. The only
fluid to stay away from when looking to maintain hydration is (10).

Activity 1

Name some of the sources, apart from water, that help contribute to our daily fluid intake:
• All liquids beside alcohol contribute to our daily water intake – including fruit juice, milk, tea, coffee,
and soda.
• Water can also be found in certain foods – up to 20% of our daily fluid intake may come from food.
• Some foods contain more liquid than others – fresh fruits and vegetables, soups, and yogurt are all
good sources.
