Job Posting: 2019–2020 Business Editor

As part of our mission to serve our readership with high quality, engaging, and interest-specific
content, The Varsity launched a Business Section last year. Now in its second year of
existence, the Business Editor will be responsible for continuing the growth of the section in
both diversity of content and contributors. This job is an exciting opportunity to delve into the
world of business at U of T, as well as experience working at a fast-paced weekly student

Varsity Publications Inc. is an incorporated not-for-profit corporation entirely managed and

operated by students. It publishes The Varsity, which puts out 18,000 copies each week during
the academic year and maintains a strong online presence through its website (


The Business Editor will be responsible for:

● Assigning and editing news stories and columns pertaining to business topics relevant to
The Varsity’s readership on a rolling basis for
● Advising the Managing Editor and Creative Director on which online articles are to be
included in the one-page print section every week
● Recruiting, building, and training a team of Varsity business reporters
● Maintaining strong beat coverage of university finances, labour negotiations, donations,
partnerships, student-led startups, business events and competitions on campus
● Managing an Associate Business Editor and team of staff writers.

Experience and Qualifications

● Current student at U of T
● Able to be a team player in a fast-paced environment
● A capable leader and communicator
● Hardworking, self-motivated, organized, and punctual
● Knowledge of business and finance, especially as they relate to U of T and campus life
● Understanding of current, newsworthy, business-related issues on campus
● Strong writing and editing skills required
● Formal experience in journalism and/or digital media a strong asset.

Salary: $7,425.60
Hours: 15 hours/week
Term: Late-July 2019 – April 30, 2020
