“Kabir Singh” is a Bollywood romantic drama film written and directed by

Sadeep Vanga. A remake of his own Telugu film “Arjun Reddy”. The film stars
Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani in the leading characters. The film released on
June 21st, 2019.

Shahid Kapoor plays the role of “Kabir Singh”, a young and intelligent lad in his
final years at a Medical College in Delhi. Although being a well-rounded
student, due to his severe anger management issues and the denial of
marriage from his girlfriend Preeti played by “Kiara Advani” he goes on a self-
destructive path characterized by severe alcohol and drug use which threatens
his career and also his life.

Although the plot of the film as I would like to say is quite weak, there are
some instances in which you do feel adrenaline and have to praise the intense
action sequences. The movie is sometimes light hearted but at others totally
gritty and dark which does not add up for me as I couldn’t quite well
understand the tonal changes with every passing scene. The script is weak and
the direction not very pleasing, a typical Bollywood movie showing toxic
masculinity and misogyny which for me in a year like 2019 is old and not very
pleasing to see on the big screen.

Apart from the negatives of a stale story and poor direction, the performance
of Shahid Kapoor as “Kabir Singh” was amazing and pleasing to watch. Kapoor
plays the character so well that you get absorbed in to the misery of Kabir’s life
and at times do feel sorry for him. From playing an angry young man in his
college days to a gritty and tired self-destructive alcoholic, Kapoor nails it all
and in my opinion performs one of his best roles to date. Another plus point
for me was the soothing and rich music of the film which undoubtedly casts a
charm on the audience and absorbs them deep into the film.

In my conclusion Kabir Singh from a storical point of view is a stale and a

already seen content but Kapoor’s acting is the remarkable thing that saves the
movie from complete disaster. The sequences are interesting but the element
of curiosity is lost and that for me was not very enjoyable. I would give the fim
a 2.5 out of 5 star just for the well composed music and the obviously for the
beautiful and compelling portrayal of the leading character by Shahid Kapoor.
