Title: Testing of Portland Cement II

Series: Concrete Materials and Mix Sub-Series
Produced by: Human Resource Training and Materials
Development Division, AMMS
Date: March 2003
Opening course title : Part II
PART II
4. Time of Setting by Gillmore
Needle
5. Autoclave Expansion Test
6. Air Content of Hydraulic
Cement
7. Compressive Strength of
Cement
4th test : Time of Setting by Gilmore
PART II
Needle
Time of Setting by
Gillmore Needle

Determines whether type

of cement complies with
specified limit on setting
time.
Apparatus needed : Scales and
weights
Graduated cylinder
Gillmore apparatus
Cement samples
Test procedure: Prepare cement paste
Mold in a glass plate
Place in moist closet
Determine initial setting
Place back in cabinet
Take final setting time
5th test : Autoclave Expansion Test
PART II

Autoclave Expansion Test

Provides an index of potential

delayed expansion caused by
the hydration of Calcium Oxide
or Magnesium Oxide or both
Apparatus needed :Autoclave
apparatus
Moist closet
Mold
Trowel
Length comparator
Cement samples
Test procedure: Prepare cement paste
Place paste in molds
Cut off paste
Store in moist closet
Remove sample
Place inside autoclave machine
Remove specimen
Formula : % Autoclave Expansion

Final Original
% Autoclave Length Length
X 100
Expansion =
Original + 300
Length

Note: 300 = length reference bar

6th test : Air Content of Hydraulic
PART II Cement Test

Air Content of Hydraulic Cement

Test
Determines whether the Hydraulic
Cement meets the air-entraining or
non-air-entraining requirements of
the applicable hydraulic cement
specification.
Apparatus needed : Spatula
Mixer
Flow table
Trowel, etc.
Cylindrical measure
Cement samples
Test procedure : Place water in bowl
Add cement
Start mixer and add sand
Determine water using flow table
Place mortar
Tamp each layer
Tap the measure
Weigh
Formula : Air Content

(182.7 + P)
Air = 100-W
Content (200 + P)

P = percentage of mixing water

based on weight of cement
7th test : Compressive Strength of
Cement
PART II

Compressive Strength
of Cement Test
Determines the compressive
strength of hydraulic cement
mortars using 2 in. or 50 mm.
Apparatus needed : Compression
machine
Mixer
Mortar molds
Balance
Sample cement
Test procedure : Prepare a standard
mortar
Standard Mortar
- one part cement to 2.75 parts of
standards sand

Mixing Water
- use water-cement ratio of 0.485
for all portland cement
Mix water and cement
Add sand
Place in mortar mold
Level mold surface
Cure the specimens in air
Remove specimens
Cure specimens in water
Get compressive strength
