THE INVISIBLE KNIGHTS
As many of you are aware, as of July 1, 2019, the regalia of the Fourth Degree can no longer be worn by the Color Corps
(Honor Guard) at any Knights of Columbus function. This includes parades, masses, funerals, wakes, exemplifications,
assembly meetings, etc., etc., etc. You will no longer see the feathered chapeaus and the capes. What you will see is men in
blue blazers and berets.

Out with the Old In with the New

Fourth degree Knights had been wearing the regalia for over seventy years. It had become the “face” of the Knights of
Columbus. When people saw our Knights in regalia, they knew who we were. The colorful display and pageantry added so
much to the events in which the Color Corps participated. The Color Corps enhanced the experience of every event, whether
it was the simple posting of the flags at an assembly meeting or lining the aisle of the cathedral for the Cardinal. The Color
Corps even stood for the Pope! Now, if the Color Corps is invited to a parade, no one will know who we are, or, more
importantly, no one will know what we represent. The Color Corps is now just another group. We have become invisible.
When I was a young altar boy, we sometimes went to the local convent in my hometown to participate in processions. This
is where I first saw the Knights. They were in their colorful capes and chapeaus, and they carried swords! To say the least,
they captured my attention. When I took the Fourth Degree, the line of Color Corpsmen seemed to go on forever as they
escorted us into the exemplification chamber. It was impressive. I committed to the Color Corps that same day. Will the
young alter server’s interest in the Knights be peaked by men in berets? Will new Fourth Degree Knights experience the
awe of the multitude of honor guardsmen as I did?
I have the new uniform. It looks nice enough (except for the beret). I have been wearing the new uniform to our assembly
meetings since it was introduced. Notice that I refer to it as a uniform. It is not regalia, and it will never be regalia. We have
lost an important symbol and tradition that the new uniform cannot replace.
The Knights have become invisible.
I will follow the orders of the Supreme Master and continue to wear the new uniform. But I won’t like it.
