Safety precautions for work with installation “Termika”

All equipment contain hazards from noise, compressed gas, compressed air and fuel gas. When
using installation and their components, basic safety precautions must always be followed to reduce the
risk of personal injury and mechanical damage.

Important: This installation should be operated only by trained personnel in accordance with the
User Manual, safety decals, safety procedures and instructions for safe machine operation.

Only authorized personnel should work on this installation. Untrained

personnel present a hazard to themselves and the installation. Improper
operation will void the warranty.
Risk of serious physical injury. Fine particles of powders can be
dangerous.

Must wear safety glasses when operating or in area installation. Contact

with flying particles of powders eyes can cause loss of sight.

Combustible gases used.

Risk of ear injury. During the work with installation use noise reduction
and protective means. Noise level can exceed 120 db.

Wear safety glasses when operating or in area of installation. Also, wear

safety goggles complying with ANSI to reduce the risk of damage.

Use respiratory protection during work on the equipment.

5
READ BEFORE OPERATING THIS installation:
 Only authorized personnel should work on this installation. Untrained personnel present a hazard to
themselves and the installation, and improper operation will void the warranty.
 Check for damaged parts before operating the installation. Check all connections to make sure there are
no gas leaks.
 The room in which the works are carried out with the installation must be equipped with exhaust
ventilation. Operation of equipment without ventilation is prohibited.
 Before you start, read the requirements of local regulations and safety standards.
 It is the workshop owner’s responsibility to make sure that everyone who is involved in installing and
operating the machine is thoroughly acquainted with the installation, operation, and safety instructions
BEFORE they perform any actual work. The ultimate responsibility for safety rests with the workshop
owner and the individuals who work with the machine.

 Operation by untrained personnel is prohibited.

 Work without protective goggles is prohibited.
 Work without a respirator is prohibited.
 Work without hearing protectors is prohibited.
 Follow the general rules for storing, transportation and installation of compressed gas. The
containers with inflammable gas and oxygen should be stored separately in rooms supplied
with fireproof partitions.

If you are just starting to use thermal spraying equipment, we highly recommend you to read the
documents of the Thermal Spray Society.

Introducing
The “Termika-3” is a portable installation for deposition of coatings from different powder
materials by a method HVOF.

Principle of operation:
The formation of coatings on surfaces work-pieces is achieved by heating up fragments of powder
material supplied from the feeder of the burner until they reach ductile condition. This allows to boost
them up to speeds of 500-700m/sec in hyper-thermal (2850-3000⁰С) flow of a gas burner.

Package of the Termika-3

The package of the setup “Termika-3" consists of:

1. Burners for inner deposition

2. Console of control of working gases
3. Containers for ID burners
4. Feeder powder
5. Complete set of gas hoses for the burners and feeder
6. Burner for outside deposition
7. Container for the powder
8. Tripod
9. Complete set of gas hoses for the inner burners

The package also includes ear muffs, a lighter and a set of spare parts.
The weight of a complete set is 20 kg.

7
Assigning a “Termika-3”.
Portable installation “Termika-3” is intended for production of
coatings from different powder materials in field and steady-state
conditions on surfaces of work-pieces, recovery and
strengthening them from wear, and also for surface protection of
parts subject of the hyper-thermal oxidation and corrosion. The
process of production of coatings can implement as in manual,
and automatic mode (on a lathe or special manipulator).

Equipment Termika-3 can use any manufacturers powders intended for application by HVOF
method the powders with a grain size indicated in the table above.

9
In addition, the quality of the coating depend on presence of
water vapours in the compressed air. For best results, we
recommend to use air dryers.
Compressor productivity must be 500 l/min (minimum)

Figure 4. Air dryer

Today, many world companies are working to produce powders for HVOF technology. Types of
these powders differ in accord with the the shape of the grains. For our equipment, we
recommend to use agglomerated powders (look picture).

Using the form of powders with grains CRUSHED and BLEND causes premature wear elements of
powder tract.

Set up the main burner’s

holder

17
Place the main burner

18
Gas Line Connection

When you attach the hose to the

console use two wrenches (see photo)!

First, connect the hoses joining the main burner and the control console.

In the bundled, these hoses are already connected to the main burner. What is left is only to attach the free
ends to the outlet console.
First connect the oxygen hose to the outlet console.

19
Then connect the compressed air hose to the outlet console.

Then, connect the propane hose to the outlet console.

20
Connect the outlet console to the sources of oxygen, propane and compressed air.

Connect the hose of the compressor,

the oxygen hose,

21
and the hose of propane to the outlet console.

Check the correctness and tightness of the joints.

For connecting to the gas cylinder, we strongly recommend it to use hoses with the
following diameters:
 for oxygen not less than 6 mm
 for propane not less than 8 mm
 for air not less than 8 mm

The length of the hoses should not exceed 5-5.5 m.

It is not advisable to change the length of the hoses between the burner and the console,
recommended by the producer.

22
Feeder Hoses Connection

Connect the compressed air outlet on the control console to the valve on the feeder.

Connect the flow meter with the feeder.

23
Connect the outlet of the feeder to the burner.

Congratulations: all connections are completed. Re-check the correctness and the tightness of the
connections and proceed to the first test run of the installation.

24
Ignition burner

Open the valve on the propane tank and set 5 bar pressure

Open the valve on the tank with oxygen and set 8 bar pressure

Pressure limits of the compressed air should not be less than 7 bar.

25
Set the control console handle to the "O “(open) position.

Open the valves on the control console and check the readings of manometers.

The indications must comply with the settings in the table, provided in the technical documentation for
your installation.

Note:
Usually, the pressure adjustment is not required, but in case of discrepancy with the actual values of the
data table, you can adjust it using the controls on the console.

26
Check the flowmeter. Flowmeter shows the
current consumption of carrier gas. Its value
should be equal to 13-14 liters per minute and
pressure of 4.5-5.5 bar. If needed, adjust the flow
rate of the carrier gas with the help of handle 1
and pressure of the carrier gas with the help of
handle 2. (Figure 6)

Figure 6. Adjust the flow rate of

powder

Turn the main control handle to the F (flame) position.

Ignite the gas (gas mixture) at the output of the air nozzle.

Smoothly and continuously, rotate the main handle in the counter-clockwise direction to the “O” position.

27
The burner sets into the working mode and you can watch light diamond-shaped areas in a flame jet.

When settings properly configured, you will see 6 or 7 of these light diamond-shaped areas

If you do not see such areas or the burner does not get into the operating mode, see "System Setup"

28
Powder feed

Open the air valve (1)

Adjust the flow rate of powder with the help of handle 2.
(Figure 7)

Figure 7. Adjust the flow rate of

powder

Turn-off of the burner.

Turn off powder supply with the help of handle 2 (figure 7).

To turn the burner off, rotate the main

handle of the console to position “A”
(Air) , wait 0.5-1 min for cooling burner.
Then turn handle to position “C” (Close)
and close all valves.
