Your name should not be included anywhere on the drawing sheet

Question 1

A universal coupling is used to couple two shafts whose axes may not be in line with
each other but intersect at a point. It consists of the following components:

• 2 similar forks
• 1 centre block
• 2 pins
• 2 collars
• 2 lock pins

Figure 1 shows pictorial representations of the major components of the universal

coupling. Figure 2 shows detail drawings of all the above listed components. Assemble
the 9 parts of the universal joint. The relative positions of the different components
should be such that the joint is used to couple two aligned shafts. Draw to an
appropriate scale a multi-view drawing containing the following views of the assembled
universal coupling:

(a) front view;

(indicated by the position of fork in Figure 1 and the labelled arrow)
(b) side view;
(c) sectional top view.
(horizontal cutting plane passing through the assembly at mid-height position)

Important:

1. Hidden details should be shown in your answers to part (a) and (b) only.
2. Draw the cutting plane line in an appropriate view.
3. Add SEVEN (7) principal dimensions, one of which should be that of a circular
feature.
4. Include a title block containing the following information:
date, scale and units used, your ID number
