Current Settings
The first menu option displays detailed information on the LANPAL100’s current
network settings. This screen can be used to compare the LANPAL100’s settings to
settings on an end user’s PC to determine if there is a problem with the network or
the end user’s PC.
Since the display is updated in real time, the Link status can be used to diagnose
faulty cables. When Link is yes, the LANPAL100 has detected an Ethernet network
connected to its Ethernet jack. When Link is no/check cable, the network
connection has been broken. If a faulty cable or crimp is suspected, wiggle the
Ethernet cable and check the Link status on the display.

Current settings for DHCP Lease exp indicates how long the IP address is
leased from the DHCP server. This is set by the
provider.
IP Address is the address assigned to the
LANPAL100.

Test Download/Upload Speed
The LANPAL100 speed test is similar to the speed test that can be run on an end
user’s PC. The LANPAL100 connects to a web site and measures the
download/upload speed of a large file. While downloading the file, the LANPAL100
displays its progress and overall speed (measured in kilobits per second).

Note: The LANPAL100’s top speed is approximately 4000 kbps. No matter how
fast the end user’s network connection is, the LANPAL100 will never go
much higher than 4000 kbps. If a speed test reports abnormal results,
simply run it again.

If an end user’s PC is reporting poor results on the speed test, it can be determined
whether it is a problem with the computer or the Internet connection. Simply
unplug the Ethernet cable from the back of the end user’s PC and plug it into the
LANPAL100. Run the speed test and compare the LANPAL100 results to the results of
the end user’s PC.
The LANPAL100 should report a speed of approximately 75-85% of the quoted line
speed. For example, the LANPAL100 would report about 800kbps on a 1024kbps
line.
Pressing the left arrow button during the test will abort it. At the end of the test, press
the left arrow button to return to the Network Test Tools main menu or click on the
right arrow button to perform the download/upload speed test.

Ping Test
A simple way to test network connectivity is to ping a remote host. The ping test
sends an ICMP Echo message and watches for an ICMP Echo Reply. By sending
multiple pings and tracking the time it takes to receive a reply, the reliability and
responsiveness of the network can be determined.
Starting a Ping Test on the LANPAL100 allows the selection of the following hosts:

Host Description

Default Gateway Verify connectivity to the first network router.

Name Server, and Verify connectivity to various servers on the local network.
DHCP Server

Speed Test Server Verify connectivity with the network used for download and
upload speed tests. The default network server is

ARP Network Scan

The LANPAL100 can use ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) packets to scan the
local subnet for used and available addresses.
The ARP Scan works by sending multiple ARP requests to all possible addresses on
the subnet. If a device on the network is using a particular address, it will respond to
the request with its associated MAC address.

Note: The LANPAL100 can only perform an ARP Network Scan for networks
having a mask of at least 20 bits.

The LANPAL100 displays the number of

addresses used and available, plus the
percentage of addresses in use. Use the up and
down arrow buttons to toggle between used and
available addresses, the right arrow button to
select and the left arrow button to exit.

Use the up and down arrow buttons to scroll

through the list of used addresses. Use the right
arrow button to toggle between displaying IP
addresses…

…and the corresponding MAC address for each

IP. Use the left arrow button to go back to the
ARP Network Scan summary.

Use the up and down arrow buttons to scroll

through the list of available addresses. Use the
left arrow button to go back to the ARP Network
Scan summary.

This screen is displayed when the Ethernet link

between the LANPAL100 and the network is
broken or the cable is unplugged.
This screen is displayed when the network is too
big to perform an ARP Network Scan. From this
screen the /16 indicates a mask of 16 bits. The
network mask must be 20 bits at least.

NAT/firewall check
This is a simple test to determine whether the LANPAL100 is connected directly to
the Internet, connected to the Internet through a firewall, or if it is on a private
network and connected to the Internet via a device that provides Network Address
Translation (NAT). NAT is sometimes referred to as IP Masquerading (ipmasq) or
Internet Connection Sharing.
A NAT device is a special type of router/firewall that allows multiple computers on a
private network to share a single Internet IP address. When connecting through a
NAT device, the LANPAL100 appears to have the NAT device’s IP address instead of
its actual IP address.

The LANPAL100 starts the NAT/firewall check

test. To check for NAT, the LANPAL100 connects
to a CGI script on www.exfo.com.

If the test is successful, one of the following four results is displayed (IP addresses

The LANPAL100 has an IP address and connects

to the Internet through a NAT device with a
public IP address. Inbound connections to
66.201.245.151 are forwarded back to the
LANPAL100.

There are three ways the test can fail. In the first two cases, use the other
LANPAL100 tests (like the ping test) to confirm that there is a valid network
connection.

The LANPAL100 is unable to look up

lanpal.exfo.com on the current DNS servers.
This can happen if the LANPAL100 doesn’t have
a valid Internet connection, or was unable to
configure itself via DHCP.

The LANPAL100 couldn’t connect to

lanpal.exfo.com. This can happen if the
lanpal.exfo.com server is down, or there is a
problem with the LANPAL100’s network
connection.

The LANPAL100 was able to connect to

lanpal.exfo.com, but there was an error on the
server that prevented the test from working.

Technical details on the firewall and two-way NAT test: During the NAT test, the
exfo.com server attempts to send SNMP packets (UDP port 161) back to the IP
address connecting to it. If the LANPAL100 connects through a one-way NAT or a
firewall that blocks SNMP packets, the LANPAL100 won’t receive the packets.

Test PC NIC
In addition to testing the network, it is possible to use the LANPAL100 to test a
computer’s NIC (network interface card). The Test PC NIC option allows checking
for a network link to the PC, verifying if the PC attempts to dynamically acquire an IP
address with DHCP, and finding out whether the PC responds to ping packets.

Note: This test will not work if the PC/laptop is configured to use a static IP
address instead of DHCP. The test may not work if a wireless connection
is enabled on the laptop/PC. It may be necessary to connect the cable
and start the PC NIC Test on the LANPAL100 before turning on the
PC/laptop.

The LANPAL100 requires about 5 seconds to set

itself up the first time the PC NIC Test runs.

The LANPAL100 displays this screen until there

is a physical connection to a functional,
powered PC NIC. Use the supplied yellow
crossover Ethernet cable to connect the
LANPAL100’s network jack directly to the
Ethernet port on the PC’s NIC. Certain PC NIC
cards may support a straight through
connection.

Once the link is established, the LANPAL100

waits for the PC to ask for an IP address via
DHCP. It will continue to display can’t ping PC
until the PC responds to the LANPAL100’s ping
packets.

The PC will initially broadcast a “DISCOVER”

message, asking for an IP address from any
available DHCP server. The LANPAL100
emulates a DHCP server and responds with an
offer of 10.0.0.10. When the LANPAL100 receives
packets from the PC, it will show the PC’s
12-character MAC address on the last line of the
display.
If the PC accepts the DHCP server’s offer, it will
request the address. This screen shows the PC
accepting the LANPAL100’s offer and requesting
the address. If the display reads IP REQUEST
bad, then the PC is asking for a different IP
address.

If the PC successfully configures itself with the IP

address and starts responding to the
LANPAL100’s ping packets, the display will show
PC config tests good. The test is completed and
the PC should work fine on a DHCP-based
network.

Troubleshooting during the PC NIC Test

During the PC NIC Test, the LANPAL100 will attempt to ping the PC. For additional
confirmation, try pinging the LANPAL100 from the PC. On a Windows PC, bring up a
command-line or DOS prompt and type “ping 10.0.0.2”. The PC’s NIC and Internet
(TCP/IP) configuration is good if the PC receives responses from the LANPAL100
(i.e., the pings don’t time out).
Winipcfg and ipconfig utilities can also be used on Windows PCs to check the status
of the NIC and Internet (TCP/IP) settings.

Cable Testing 30

5 Cable Testing
This section provides information on the following main menu items:
³ Cable Tester on page 30
³ Wiring Reference on page 33
³ Tone Generator on page 34

The LANPAL100 is equipped with two cable tester ports allowing to perform cable
testing.

Note: The LANPAL100 can test cables having RJ11 to RJ45 type of connectors.

Cable Tester
Note: The LANPAL100 only tests cable continuity (whether a signal reaches the
other end of the cable). It does not detect split pairs or cross-talk on a
cable.

To begin a test, insert one end of a

cable into the LANPAL100’s port A and
the other end into port B. In-wall cables
can be tested by plugging long cables
(that have already been tested) into
each wall jack and connecting them to
the LANPAL100.
The following windows show examples for various cable types. The Pin Map
provides a detailed pin-out of the cable. The paired numbers (A and B) represent a
connection. For example, in the Ethernet Crossover shot, the first pair of numbers
indicates that pin 1 on port A goes to pin 3 on port B.

“Crossover” cable

“Straight Through” cable

“Flipped” cable

Nothing connected to tester

Opened pins
Pins 2 and 5 on A are opened pins.
Note: An opened pin may also indicate a
possible short on A.

Shorted pins
Pins 1 on A go to multiple pins on B
Note: An opened pin may also indicate a
possible short on A.

LANPAL100 31
Cable Testing 32

Use the up arrow button to replace all straight through pin numbers by arrows. For
example, pins 1, 4, 7, and 8 on port A goes respectively to pins 1, 4, 7, and 8 on
port B.

Use the down arrow button to change back the display from arrows to pin numbers.
Wiring Reference
The LANPAL100 includes reference information to assist in typical telephone and
Ethernet wiring. From the Wiring Reference menu, it is possible to find out which
wire to connect to each pin of a phone/network jack/cable. A visual diagram of the
pairs and their pin assignment is displayed.
Use the up and down arrow buttons to select the wiring types:

EIA/TIA 568B

EIA/TIA 568A

3-line phone

2-line phone

Note: For banded colors, the first color is the wire color and the second, the
color of the stripe. For example, WH/OR means that the wire is white
with an orange stripe while OR/WH means that the wire is orange with
a white stripe.

Use the left arrow button to exit.

LANPAL100 33
Cable Testing 34

Tone Generator
The LANPAL100 can generate a warble tone on any given wire’s pair on its port A for
tracking cable pairs with an inductive amplifier.
An interesting application of the Tone Generator function is when the LANPAL100 is
used jointly with an inductive amplifier (tone detector) device to identify and locate
cable pairs. What is an inductive amplifier? An inductive amplifier permits cable
identification without making direct metallic contact.

When in Tone generator mode, connect

one end of the cable to port A and find
the other end by moving a tone detector
(inductive amplifier) towards the other
end.
This is an easy method to match cable
ends at hundreds feet away or to find a
single cable within a bundle of cables.

Wiring Types
Select the appropriate cable type for the cable plugged into port A. Choices are:

EIA/TIA 568B

EIA/TIA 568A

3-Line phone
2-Line phone

Use the up and down arrow buttons to select the pairs, and the left and right arrow
buttons to turn tone on and off for each pair.
To exit, use the left arrow button.

Procedure to setup a speed test server
To setup your own speed test server, you require knowing whether your company
web server is UNIX or Windows based system. You will also require administrative
rights to create some directories to store the file that needs to be downloaded as
well as a script file for the upload speed test. IIS (Internet Information Server) must
be enabled when using a Windows based Web browser.
To create an ideal download file, make sure that the file is compressed, for example
an MP3 file, this way networking equipment will not compress the file that may
distort the results. It will also be a good idea to make the file the same size as the
link being tested; for example, if the service being offered to the end user is 3 Mbps,
then make the file a 3 Megabyte file. Note that 1 Megabyte = 8 Megabits.

Download speed test

Connect the LANPAL100 to the network using DHCP. Once the LANPAL100 has its IP
address, go to the Current Settings menu. From the PC, enter the IP address of the
LANPAL100 into the Web browser. This should open up the Web page where the
user can configure many parameters for the LANPAL100. Under the Speed Test
section, enter the file locations for both the download and upload. Then click on the
Save Changes button. The LANPAL100 should now be updated with the new file
locations.

UNIX upload file

Create a new file with the following information in the file.

#!/bin/sh

echo "Content-type: text/html"

echo ""
if test -z $CONTENT_LENGTH; then
echo "ok 0 bytes uploaded"
else
echo "ok $CONTENT_LENGTH bytes uploaded"
fi

Name the file upload.cgi and save it in a script directory, for example cgi-bin. In
addition, make sure that the execute bit is set.

Windows upload file

Create a new file with the following information.

<% Response.Write "ok " & Request.TotalBytes & " bytes uploaded" %>

Name the file upload.asp. Make sure that the directory and the file have execute
permissions enabled.

Solving Common Problems

Problem Possible Cause Solution

Unable to get an IP Connection/link problem Make sure the LANPAL100

address using DHCP is properly connected to
the network via its
Ethernet port.
Make sure the cable is
good or appropriate
(straight through or
crossover).
DHCP problem Contact your service
provider.
Residential internet connectivity problem
To solve a residential internet connectivity problem
1. First connect the LANPAL100 Ethernet port directly to the modem.
2. Perform an Auto-Test Internet.
3. Go to the Current Settings screen.
Depending where the test fails, the following steps can be performed to
find the source of the problem.
1. Make sure the LANPAL100 has a network link. If the LANPAL100 has no network
link, verify the cable using the Cable Tester on the LANPAL100.
2. Validate that the LANPAL100 has a valid IP address and that the lease is not
expired. If there is no lease, renew the lease on the LANPAL100. If the
LANPAL100 still do not have an IP address, there could be a problem with the
DHCP server.
3. Validate that all other servers, for example DNS, Default Gateway, etc., have a
valid IP address. If there appears to be a problem with one of the servers, use
the LANPAL100 to ping the devices. It would be useful to first ping the default
gateway, then ping the DNS server, ping the speed server and finally ping an
external site (for example www.yahoo.com). If it is not possible to ping one of
the above mentioned servers, investigate the problem further.
4. If all the current settings are valid, but it is not possible to perform the download
or upload speed test, verify with your IT administrator that the valid access rights
have been given to the download and upload server. Note, that if the default
servers are used, there should not be any issues with access. If it is possible to
successfully ping www.yahoo.com and ping lanpal.exfo.com, there should be
no problems.
5. If all the above steps work correctly, there is no issue with the Internet service. If
the customer still has problems, further investigation is needed. Check the
network card of the end user PC. Validate the cable(s). Verify that the computer
is setup for DHCP.
