Job Posting: 2019–2020 Designer

The Varsity​, Canada’s largest student newspaper and U of T’s leading campus publication since
1880, is hiring a Designer for the 2019–2020 publication year.

The Varsity​ produces 24 issues of the newspaper throughout the academic year, as well as two
magazines, and maintains a constant online presence through social media and a website.
There is plenty of room for freedom and creativity for a Designer interested in making their mark
in envisioning and executing a unique design for the year. This is also an excellent opportunity
to be involved in a fast-paced media organization for those with an interest in journalism.

Varsity Publications Inc. is an incorporated not-for-profit corporation entirely managed and

operated by students. It publishes The Varsity, which puts out 18,000 copies each week during
the academic year and maintains a strong online presence through its website (
and social media.


The Designer is responsible for:

● Envisioning and executing The Varsity’s design, both in print and online

● Layout, design, and production of The Varsity’s print issue during newspaper production
on Saturdays and Sundays during the academic year, as well as the production of one
magazine each for the fall and winter academic sessions

● Collaborating with section editors on a weekly basis to develop design elements for The
Varsity’s print edition and online content

● Working with the design team and visuals editors on promotional and marketing efforts

● Collaborating with other staff to recruit and train new contributors

● Working in-office when appropriate and attending regular meetings.

Experience and Qualifications

● Current U of T student

● Proven experience in print layout and innovation

● Highly skilled in InDesign, Adobe Illustrator, and Photoshop

● Interest in journalism

● Able to be a team player in a fast-paced environment

● A strong communicator and detail oriented

● Hardworking, self-motivated, organized, and punctual

Salary​: $9,900.80

Hours​: 20 hours/week minimum

Term​: September 2019–April 30, 2020
