Course Description: This course is an honors level course that presents the basic structure of
geometry. Emphasis is placed on logical thinking and developing thinking skills. The student
gains an understanding of coordinate geometry and thus recognizes how geometry and algebra
complement one another. The course strives to integrate its applications and apply it to
situations. It is a challenging course that gives visual meaning to mathematics. Topics include:
proofs, lines, planes, polygons, circles, area, volume and coordinate geometry.

Prerequisite: Algebra 1 with a B+ or higher average

Text: Glencoe Geometry

Boyd, Cummins, Malloy, Carter, Flores

Objectives:
Content:
1. To learn the basic structure of geometry
2. To grow in the understanding of deductive and inductive methods, and to gain an
appreciation of the need for precision in language.
3. To understand how geometry and algebra complement each other
4. To develop cognitive and creative thinking skills through problem solving
5. To recognize real-world application of geometric concepts

Skills:
1. To maintain and strengthen algebraic skills
2. To analyze a geometrical figure and make effective conjectures about it
3. To solve problems effectively using geometric concepts and investigative measures
4. To connect mathematics, its ideas, and its applications
5. To use technology to help solve problems

Materials Required:
1. Textbook: each student must have his/her text book in class every day.
2. Pencils and erasers: All assignments must be done in pencil.
3. Graphing Calculator: TI-83 or TI-84
4. 3-ring binder with dividers and ample loose-leaf paper

Grading System:
Tests: 40-100 points each
Quizzes 10-40 points each
Homework: 2-4 points each (graded for completeness and/or accuracy)
Class Participation /Preparation: 10 points per quarter
Quarter Grade Calculation: points earned divided by points possible times 100
Homework: Homework must be done in pencil on loose-leaf paper. At the beginning of each
class, your binder should be opened to the page that contains the previous night’s homework.
Make corrections to assignments as needed. Homework assignments will be posted on the
classroom board and on google docs. Unless otherwise stated, students are allowed to work on
homework together.

Quizzes: Expect to have about one quiz per week.

Tests: We will have a test at the end of each unit. Tests will always be announced in advance.

Class Participation: Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class and participation in
class will count towards your grade. Unexcused tardies, inappropriate behavior, and failure to
bring required materials to class will lower this grade.

Algebra Review – Every long period, we will do an algebra review problem set in small groups.
These will not be graded for accuracy and are designed to help maintain algebra skills learned in
Algebra 1.

Exams: Exams will be given at the end of each semester and will count as 25% of the semester
grade. The first semester exam will be Thursday, December 19 at 9:00 am.

Attendance: Students are expected to be in class on time each day. Each student is responsible
for obtaining class notes and assignments when absent. If you leave school early, please turn in
the assignment that is due that day before you leave. This includes early dismissal for sporting
events.

Make-up Work: It is the student’s responsibility to identify missed assignments and material
and to make up the work in a timely manner. Work assigned prior to an absence is expected to be
turned in the 1st day that the student returns. The due date for work assigned during a student’s
absence is extended the same number of days the student misses.

Class Rules: You will be expected to follow all rules and policies as they are presented in the
student handbook. Please make special note of the honor system. The use of cell phones and
other electronics is prohibited in class at all times. Cell phones will be collected before each
quiz and test.

Extra Help: I will be available in room C-5 for tutorial to start each discovery period. If a
student is absent, he or she should obtain the notes from another student and try the
material before attending tutorial. After trying the material, the student may come to tutorial
with specific questions.

Extended Time: Students who have documented (with the ARC) extended time on tests and
quizzes must complete the graded work on the day that it is given. This will be done either in a
study hall or during Discovery Period
